This 9-Year-Old ‘Couple’ Saying Goodbye Is the Sweetest Thing Ever

Merce and Mylee are on their way to breaking the Internet — and they’re only 9 years old. The two kids, who playfully call themselves boyfriend and girlfriend, were pictured tearfully hugging each other in a tweet posted on Monday evening. And with such sweet photos, it’s no wonder the post is going viral.

“My little sisters boyfriend is moving and their goodbyes were the saddest thing ever,” the post reads – and has already garnered over 145,000 likes.

A range of emotional reactions immediately accumulated in response to the photos, where people are desperately seeking information about the adorable duo and how someone could possibly separate them. But what’s really pulling at people’s heart strings are the matching flannels.

Merce’s father, Glen Meynardie, hilariously found out about his son’s sudden fame on Twitter, tweeting: “When your son goes viral on twitter and you don’t even know.”

Meynardie was able to speak with Yahoo Style to answer some of the many burning questions people have.

“They have been in dance class together at Merce’s grandmother’s dance studio in Gonzales, La., since they were around 2 years old,” Meynardie tells Yahoo Beauty. “They have always said they were boyfriend and girlfriend for as long as I can remember.”

The children aren’t actually allowed to “date” at their age, and Meynardie explains that the title they’ve given themselves isn’t taken too seriously. It just illustrates the strong bond that they have as friends.

“They greet each other with a hug before class, and after each class, Merce walks her to the car and hugs her goodbye,” he says. “I can remember them holding hands at dance competitions when they were 2 or 3 years old.”

Now, seven years after the two initially met, Merce’s family is moving to California for Meynardie’s new job.

“When Mylee found out we were moving, she said, ‘My life is over. I’m supposed to marry Merce. How am I going to marry him if he is in California?’” Meynardie recalls.

But hopeful romantics on Twitter are already predicting their reunion.

Their poignant farewell — with the adorable matching outfits — took place at their last dance recital together.
