There's no disputing how gloriously convenient it is to have a box of fresh, seasonal fruit and veg delivered to your door. It's particularly helpful when you're trying to be a bit healthier post any festive over-indulgence (no judgement here.)

Whether you're looking to set up a regular delivery or fancy ordering a one-off healthy fridge filler, our expert panel has put the leading fruit and veg companies to the test, to see which offers the best value for money.

Best fruit and veg boxes for 2025

Which veg box is best?

There are many benefits to a regular fruit and veg box delivery. But, there are also a few things to watch out for when signing up to a scheme.

Eating seasonally

Most boxes offer a different selection of goodies each week, depending on what’s in season. Eating seasonally is better for the planet, as it reduces your carbon footprint and means you’re tasting produce at its absolute best — the difference between a ripe summer tomato and one eaten in the depths of winter is truly worlds apart.

However, eating this way will often mean a lack of control over what turns up in your box, as you’ll be leaving it to nature to see what’s on the menu. For some, this adds excitement and provides mealtime inspiration, while others might prefer the option of customising your box so you know exactly what you’ll be getting.

Organic farming

Some of the boxes we’ve put to the test are fully organic, meaning no unnecessary pesticides are used when growing your produce. Not only are these methods better for you, it’s also better for the planet, as it means working with the land to promote biodiversity. It’s also thought that organic crops contain up to 68% more antioxidants versus conventionally farmed produce.

Plastic-free boxes

If you’re keen to reduce your reliance on single-use plastic, we’ve clearly identified the boxes that deliver their produce “naked”, or securely wrapped in paper. What's more, Abel & Cole offers an opt-in "Plastic Pick-Up" scheme which collects hard to recycle plastics, such as bread bags and toilet paper wrappers.

One-off delivery vs subscription

Some of these boxes offer one-off deliveries, which is great if you want to try it out before committing. However, once set up, a weekly, fortnightly or monthly delivery means you’ll be kept in a steady stream of fresh produce without giving it another thought — avoiding the dreaded “what shall we have for dinner tonight?” question.

For a more well-rounded shop, the likes of Abel & Cole allow you to add on extra items such as bread, milk and dry goods.

How we test fruit and veg boxes

Our panel of taste testers each received a selection of fruit and veg boxes, delivered direct to their door. They were looking for excellent customer service, fresh, tasty produce and good value for money.

So whether you’re a busy couple or need to feed a large family, these are the best fruit and veg boxes, tried and tested.

Market Garden Veg Box

Score: 96/100

Fresh from Daylesford’s organic Cotswolds farm, this veg box is filled with seasonal British produce. You’ll always receive five items, and our panel appreciated the unusual, top quality ingredients.

Items arrived in perfect condition, and come with a signed note from the person who packed the box. We’d have appreciated tips on how to cook some of the more unusual veg, such as the black radish or red Russian bunch, but confident cooks will love it.

Organic Small Fruit & Veg Box

Score: 89/100

Abel & Cole’s weekly plastic-free box contains six seasonal organic fruit and vegetables. Our panel enjoyed the variety, which included huge mushrooms, ripe oranges and beautiful romanesco broccoli, all of which arrived in superb condition.

Not a fan of tomatoes? You can add up to three fruits and seven veggies to your “dislike list”, and Abel & Cole will do its best to switch for a seasonal replacement instead.

What's more, for each box sold, Abel & Cole donates a portion of fresh fruit and veg to those in need via one of its charity partners (Felix Project, Dons Local Action Group and School Food Matters).

Oddbox Medium Fruit & Veg Box

Score: 86/100

We all know that fruit and veg tastes great, whatever its shape or size, but sadly three million tonnes of the stuff gets wasted each year — and that’s before it has even left the farm! This is largely due to not conforming to the industry’s 'beauty' standards.

This box rescues the wonky fruit and veg that would otherwise go to waste, and includes recipes on what to make with each item, explaining why it had been rejected by mainstream supermarkets.

Our testers thought the service was impeccable, with the box arriving in great condition. Highlights include a giant aubergine that made a veggie lasagne, and super-sweet kiwis. Overall, they thought this offered good value for money, although some would have liked more control over what they were receiving.

Box with Fruit

Score: 84/100

This box was filled with juicy fruit and crunchy veg that was bursting with flavour, tasted high quality and arrived in perfect condition.

Testers felt a lot of thought had gone into the boxes, which was reflected by the wide variety of fruit and veg on offer, with plenty of different options for those who enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients. Handily, you can also buy other produce from the site to have delivered with your veg box, including meat and dairy.

Testers were also impressed by both the packaging, which came complete with ice packs and wool padding, and the convenient delivery service.

Seasonal Vegetable Box

Score: 78/100

If run of the mill vegetables aren’t cutting it for you, Fine Food Specialists aims to please with this ultra-luxe offering. Packed with unusual, quality veg, produce arrived loose on a wooden crate and was a feast for the eyes.

We’d have preferred to see less plastic bubble wrap and more strategic packing to avoid squashing tomatoes under heavier items, however overall, it was an exciting box to delve into.

Highlights included the cavolo nero, radishes, beetroots and Jerusalem artichokes. And even more “everyday” items such as carrots had their tops intact (perfect for making carrot top pesto!).

Granted the price tag is more than most, but if you’re a keen foodie, looking for exciting seasonal veg, we think you’ll be delighted.

Seasonal Fruit Selection

Score: 78/100

Looking for a healthy get-well gift? M&S has replaced the traditional fruit basket with this generous box of goodies.

Highlights included bananas, grapefruit, apples and crisp, juicy pears. Some of our testers found their grapes were on the turn, however with over 2,800 five-star reviews online, we're confident that this was a one-off issue.

And although the box did not contain a leaflet, we appreciated the label detailing the fruits' origin and storage suggestions. A thoughtful alternative to flowers, for someone feeling under the weather.

The Veg Box Company Small Mixed Box

Score: 75/100

If you love the thought of a farmer’s market haul, but prefer the convenience of an Amazon delivery, The Veg Box is worth checking out.

The family-run, Lancashire-based farm delivers seven days a week, and the small box will typically contain 13 items, perfect for one or two people. Testers were happy to report the veg was particularly flavoursome — especially the potatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, onions and carrots.

Seasonal Organic Fruit and Veg Box

Score: 78/100

Riverford has recently switched to new sustainably sourced, home-compostable packaging, saving 21 tonnes of plastic each year. Most of the brand’s veg is popped straight into reusable delivery boxes “naked”, and for anything that does need protecting, they use home compostable packs.

In this box, you’ll always receive the basics — such as potatoes, carrots and onions — as well as more exciting seasonal items like mushrooms or rhubarb. Although testers felt this was a little overpriced for the quantity, they were very pleased with the quality of this organic fruit and veg.

The website is a great resource for using up unfamiliar vegetables, too. Once empty, leave your box out for your delivery driver to take away and reuse.
