7 Things Michelle Keegan Does Most Mornings - Food, Fitness & Skincare

Women's Health are here to bring you an exclusive look at the morning routine of your favourite celebrities: this month, it’s actress Michelle Keegan. Catch her cover shoot and interview in the February issue of Women’s Health, out now.

There aren’t many stars who can claim national treasure status quite like Michelle Keegan. From her Corrie roots to Our Girl and Brassic, the actress has been commanding British TV screens for over a decade.

Between early morning shoots and keeping those abs in business, the self-professed ‘night owl’ makes full use of her AMs. To fill you in, we caught up with the two-time WH cover girl on the set of her February Women’s Health shoot to talk all things pre-12pm.

Keen to find out more? Scroll on for everything from her breakfast of choice (spoiler: cheese is very much included) to the workouts that fuel her mornings.

Waking up:

When she’s not jetting off around the country for shoots and events (not that there are many of those to be had at the minute), it’s a leisurely morning for Michelle.

‘It depends what day it is, but if I want a lie in, if I’ve got nothing on that day, I’ll probably get up about 9-9:30am,’ she tells Women’s Health. ‘If I'm working, probably about 7am... [and] pre-corona times I'd be picked up at 5am for a filming day.’

As for Michelle’s rising style? It’s got to be a rude awakening: ‘I wake up by alarm – I have to, otherwise I could sleep until noon.

‘I’m not a morning person. I wish I was, but I’m definitely more of a night owl. It takes me a long, long time to come round in the morning. Before I speak to anyone, I need a coffee.’ Feel. That.

Time to scroll:

In another round of Celebrities: They’re Just Like Us!, Michelle starts her day in a somewhat familiar way:

‘The first thing I do when I wake up, and I hate to say it, is probably check my phone – I want to nip that in the bud, but it’s just a habit,’ says the actress. ‘Then I go make myself a cup of tea or a coffee.’ Relatability points, very much scored.

Working out:

As someone who likes to make the most of her busy days, getting a workout in pre-midday is a non-negotiable for Michelle.

‘I like to exercise in the morning,’ she says. ‘Again, it takes me a while to come round – I’ll probably give myself an hour and then I’ll go and exercise. I like to get it out of the way.’

And her workout of choice? No fancy kit necessary: ‘If I was to do a morning workout, I’d probably do a HIIT for 45 minutes, and then I’m done for the rest of the day.’

Hitting the shower:

When it comes to her hygiene habits, Michelle has a strict bathroom schedule: ‘I shower in the morning and I like to have a bath at night,’ she tells WH. ‘I like to use anything coconut-smelling, I do like that, whether it’s shower gel or shampoo.’

And as for what scores her that signature glow, she’s all about nutrient-rich skincare. ‘I use vitamin E face moisturiser as well,’ she says. ‘I feel like it just freshens my skin up.’

Breakfast:

With Michelle’s night owl tendencies making slow mornings a necessity, it makes sense that breakfast is a delayed affair:

‘I can go quite long without eating breakfast, as I’m not hungry in the morning,’ she explains. ‘I don’t know why – my body just doesn’t function that well. I like to have a banana before I work out, just to give me a bit of energy, and then I’ll eat after my workout.’

Her typical morning menu is a brunch lover’s dream. ‘It’s normally like smashed avocado on toast with some halloumi,’ says the cover star. ‘If I was being really good, I might have some porridge with oat milk or a protein shake with dates and banana in it.’ All options sound delicious, tbh.

But there’s only one thing that can get her mornings going, if you haven’t gathered that already. ‘Normally, if I’m filming a show, I’d be up at 5am, picked up at half 5, coffee on the way or coffee when I get there,’ says Michelle. ‘As soon as I have that coffee in hand, that’s when my morning starts.’

Morning rituals:

Finally, we’ve all got those things that the morning just wouldn’t feel complete without. For Michelle, it’s all about caring for the fur babies of the house.

‘My morning rituals would be that I always wear a moisturiser with SPF and I always let the dogs out for a wee,’ she says. ‘I’ve got two dogs and they have to go out straight away in case they do it on my carpets. They don’t, because they’re very well behaved, but they go out first.’ Sounds like a good plan.
