7 of the best sun creams for deep skin tones

Nivea Anti Age Protection Face Sun Cream SPF 30, £10.49
Invisibility-factor: 6/10
I feel like this sun cream is reminiscent of childhood family holidays. Even the smell smells like holidays. However, I have to say this is one of the more grey formulas I’ve tried. The instructions does say to apply generously enough to give a ‘visible layer’ so I guess it’s intended but, come on now, as adults surely we all know how to apply sun protection evenly?

Eucerin Sun Fluid Mattifying SPF 50+, £14.23
Invisibility-factor: 7/10
I really loved the texture of this one - the fact that it’s a fluid means it blends in and sinks into skin pretty quickly. It did leave an ever-so-slight cast on my face but I put this down to it being mattifying more than the colour of the fluid. If you have sensitive, oily skin then this would definitely be for you because it leaves a soft matte finish and is fragrance free.

Bobbi Brown SPF50 Protective Face Base, £33
Invisibility-factor: 8/10
For SPF 50 protection I’m super impressed with this base, mainly because the formula is a milky white and as I saw it come out of the tube I had no hope. However, due to it’s light, liquidy texture it blended really easily and when it dried it almost completely disappeared into my skin leaving a slightly tacky feel but a nice looking glow.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Protective Oil SPF 50+, £18
Invisibility-factor: 9/10
I’m always sceptical of products that you can be used all over, I mean, who do you know that actually uses a face+body wash? However, this SPF Oil is specially formulated for people with sensitive skin. It also seems counter-intuitive to slather on an oil to protect you from the sun but, trust me it works. Of course, being an oil it leaves no grey cast on dark skin, but I would only recommend if you’re a fan of look really dewy/oily because duh, it’s an oil.

Bioderma Hydrabio Eau de Soin SPF 30, £9.95
Invisibility-factor: 10/10
Two words - invisible and oh-so refreshing. This spray on SPF water feels like a setting spray and a hydrating mist combined. It leaves no tint, no grey tinge - nothing. In fact it does kind of just feel like you’ve sprayed water on your face. In theory great, in practice hard to just let it set without wanting to wipe up or blot it, which you can’t if you want it to work effectively.

Glossier Invisible Shield Daily sunscreen SPF 30, £20
Invisibility-factor: 10/10
If you like the idea of a hydrating SPF but don’t love the idea of a watery spray then I reckon you’ll love this one. It’s just as invisible as the sprays but applies more like a smooth serum. Lush. The finish is really breathable and not at all tacky - it sinks right in so you are ready for makeup application.

Vichy Idéal Soleil Hydrating SPF30 Protective Solar Water, £19
Invisibility-factor: 10/10
Another water spray, so no grey tinge and no residue. I felt like this one set more quickly than the Bioderma offering. I love that this Vichy spray includes hyaluronic acid which helps to plump the skin up whilst protecting from the sun. Plus as an added bonus it’s a whooping 200ml so you can spray your entire self as well as your whole family and everyone else on the beach without running out.
