After a drab 90 minutes with little in the way of real goalsciring opportunities for either side, the match was decided on spot kicks.

Youngster Louie Marsh and Benie Traore both missed before skipper John Egan skied the decisive penalty to cause a cup shock at Bramall Lane, with the League One side going through in front of their very vocal support.

Here's how we rated the Sheffield United players

Picked a few crosses out of the air and made the odd comfortable stop but he wasn't really tested that much as most of Lincoln's attacking play was thwarted before it got as far as the keeper

A lot of the play was coming down the left in the first half, which meant Bogle was a bit of a by-stander. Taht changed a little in the second half but after taking a kick he was replaced by Seriki on 63 minutes (Photo: Simon Bellis)

Fairly typical Basham-esque performance. Won everything in the air, brought the ball out from the back brilliantly at times and never looked anything less than comfortable the entire game (Photo: Simon Bellis)

Even at this stage of the season there's a decent argument for Egan to have been rested for this one given the amount of football he has played over the past year or so. Nevertheless there he was marshalling the backline as usual without really breaking a sweat. Should have opened the scoring with a header from a Norwood free kick. Missed the deisive penalty (Photo: Robbie Stephenson)

A decent night's work on his Blades debut. Didn't get forward much but fed Larouci well to pick up that aspect. Never really troubled too much and laregely strolled through the match (Photo: SportImage)

Still doesn;t look like he's quite got to grips with the pace of the English game and seems to want more time on the ball than he's going to get. Made a few good runs down the left and lined up well at times with Brooks who kept veering towards that side. Hopefully a bit of a confidence-builder after Sunday (Photo: Andrew Yates)

A good run-out for the youngster who was quite heavily involved. Sometimes tried a little too hard to make something happen but was solid in the middle, always wanted the ball, worked hard and provided the odd very intelligent pass. Came off at half time for Louie Marsh (Photo: Andrew Yates)

The full repertoire of passes came out as Norwood's class stood out in the middle of the park. He sprayed balls all over the pitch and even tried an audacious effort on goal from his own half in a period where United weren't putting on too much pressure on goal. It was however well over (Photo: DARREN STAPLES)

Energetic without really doing an awful lot (Photo: SportImage)

Played off the last man with McBurnie slightly deeper but definitely looked like a player who hadn't had a proper game in a while. A few moments of deft touches and really clever movement suggested there is a lot more to come from the new singing. Brought out a decent save from Jensen after good work from Marsh. Came off just after an hour which seemed like the plan from the outset (Photo: Andrew Yates)

Linked up well the odd time with Archer but they weren't quite on the same wavelength just yet. Still trying to find his way after coming back from injury, McBurnie was a nuisance as usual before coming off at the break for Traore (Photo: SportImage)

Missed his penalty but looks an incredible talent and the latest to come off the United academy conveyor belt. Looked so composed in the middle after coming on for the second half, played superb passes and showed a maturity that belied his years. A huge future ahead of him (Photo: SportImage)

Injected a little pace and trickery to the frontline when coming on after the break but faded a little as the game wore on. Missed a penalty in the shoot out (Photo: Laurence Griffiths)

Did well in his half hour showing, getting forward to good effect and looking comfortable in defence (Photo: Simon Bellis)

Provided arguably the moment of the match with a great piece of skill and a cross that should have been turned in, in the final few minutes (Photo: Andrew Yates)

United didn't get the ball to him enough but he showed the odd flash of that pace and strength to shake up the Imps defence late on (Photo: Bradley Collyer)
