6 things we've learned from the new Gavin & Stacey Christmas special cast pictures
We’re now just over two weeks away from the biggest and most anticipated event of the year for many - not just Christmas Day itself but what is believed to be the final ever episode of Gavin & Stacey. The new episode, dubbed ‘The Finale’, will be the show’s 21st and last episode and fans are hoping that many unanswered questions will be answered. Chief among them is what exactly happened immediately after Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, proposed to Smithy, played by James Cordon.
It was Christmas Day 2019 that Nessa uttered the words “marry me” outside the West household in Barry and we’ve been left wondering what the reply was ever since. This year’s special should give us the answer, while rumours continue to circulate about whether other loose ends will be tied up - like what exactly happened on ‘that’ fishing trip with Uncle Bryn and Jason. Audiences also want to know what role Steffan Rhodri's Dave Coaches will play. He missed out on an appearance in 2019 but played a key role in series three, having very nearly married Nessa until Smithy turned up at the church to put a stop to the wedding. In new exclusive pictures released by the BBC on Tuesday morning, we can see a glimpse of what we can expect in the final episode. While the writers, cast and the BBC are keeping things close to their chests with regards to the plot, Christmas night promises to be a funny and emotional journey for Gavin and Stacey fans.

Here’s some of the images that the BBC have released and what we think they mean ahead of the new episode airing at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One.
Dave Coaches is back and he’s taking characters somewhere on his bus
We knew Steffan Rhodri was returning for the finale but we didn’t know to what extent, whether it would be a cameo appearance or something more substantial. It seems that the latter is true as the above picture shows us.
Dave is seen driving his bus with Smithy, Pam, Bryn, Jason and Stacey sat behind him. Given Pam’s head attire and Smithy’s smart suit, it appears that the characters are on their way to a wedding or at least a ceremony of some sort. And from the looks on their faces, all might not be going according to plan......
Pam has a meltdown
Pam, Gavin’s mother, is known for her meltdowns and isn’t exactly what you would describe as a laid back character. In an image released ahead of the new episode, we see one of TV’s favourite mothers/mothers in law in a familiar pose.
It’s not clear who she’s talking to but we can almost guarantee the words “Oh my Christ!” will be uttered by her in a kitchen rant about something or another. It’s unclear who the poor character she’s looking at is!
Bryn gets to show off his Picasso again
We all know Uncle Bryn adores a sat-nav and loves taking people in his trusty Citroen Picasso, which must be a good few years old by now. Here we see Gavin in the front seat, with Nessa, Stacey and Gwen sat in the back, with Bryn taking his usual spot behind the wheel.
There’s a suitcase on the top of the vehicle which suggests they’re heading to Essex to meet the rest of the clan. What could go wrong?
Something certainly goes wrong on the journey to an event
As these two pictures show, Bryn and Jason leave Dave’s coach at one point and make their way across a road and even over a gate and into a field while dressed smartly. We’re getting strong ‘Three Men and a Little Lady’ vibes from these pictures, although we won’t know where exactly they’re heading to until Christmas night!
Wherever it is they may have dirty shoes by the time they get there.
Stacey wears a white dress
This image is especially intriguing as it shows Stacey in a white dress. Now, we know Stacy married Gavin in the final episode of series one, all the way back in 2007. However, the marriage was under some strain at the start of the 2019 Christmas special before it was rekindled with a chat and a kiss next to the beach in Barry Island after both characters left the Christmas Eve party at The Dolphin pub.
So, could it be a vow renewal, or is Stacey’s dress more suitable for a bridesmaid? Again, we will have to wait and see on that one.....
Pam and Mick have a big old knees up!
Some of the best and funniest scenes in Gavin & Stacey history are those when the characters gather at Pam and Mick’s Essex home for a celebration, be it at Christmas or just for a takeaway and a few drinks.
Looking at this image, we see Gavin, Smithy, Nessa, Jason and Stacy falling about with laughter, which means we can expect another mass gathering and a lot of drunken silliness.
