The folks at Dollar Flight Club recently ran the numbers to find the six most affordable spring break destinations for families in the United States. You may not believe the top destination on the list.
6. Kona, Hawaii
This popular destination on Hawaii’s Big Island is known for some of the best coffee you’ll find in the U.S. Historic attractions, clear waters for snorkeling and miles of hiking trails provide plenty of free activities on Kona to help travelers keep costs down. Dollar Flight Club reported that the average cost of a flight from Los Angeles LAX to Kona is $221, making it a perfect budget destination for West Coast families.

5. Keystone, Colorado
The weather is still cold enough for skiing during spring break in Keystone, Colorado. You’ll find the city to be less expensive than trendy Vail, with 138 trails across 3,149 acres. It is also extremely kid-friendly, with Kids Ski Free deals. Fly into Denver for an average of $234 from other major U.S. cities, and enjoy shuttle access from Denver to Keystone for $45 (eliminating rental car costs).
4. San Diego, California
Step into the sun in San Diego for $189 per person from Chicago. From shopping to gorgeous parks, gardens and beaches, you’ll find plenty to do without breaking the bank. Dollar Flight Club said in the report that the months of March through May are some of the best times to visit for “great weather and fewer tourists.”
3. Big Bear, California
Although California remains one of the top three most expensive states to live in, according to GOBankingRates research, you’ll find a family vacation there to be surprisingly affordable. Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest boasts all four seasons due to its location in the mountains. That means you’ll find mild temps perfect for hiking, fishing and even skiing during spring break. Pay just $159 per person roundtrip to fly from Dallas (DFW) to Orange County this March.
2. Phoenix, Arizona
If you’re into hiking and seeking warm, dry temps, head to Phoenix, Arizona. Flights from Seattle are just $117 in March, according to Dollar Flight Club. Papago Park provides plenty of free activities for the whole family, including the intriguing Hole in the Rock formation — an utterly Instagram-worthy attraction with spectacular views.
1. Orlando, Florida
Although families often cite Orlando as the epitome of expensive family vacations, with a bare bones, Disney “value” vacation coming in at more than $6,800 for a family of four, as previously reported by GOBankingRates. But airfare is exceptionally affordable, and you can get shuttles from the airport to Walt Disney World Resort, saving rental car expenses. Fly into Orlando from New York’s JFK airport for just $89 per person in March. To save more on your Orlando vacation, skip Disney and get four days for the price of two at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure.
