The 6 beauty rules Margot Robbie follows for her flawless complexion

The word 'flawless' definitely comes to mind when thinking about Aussie beauty and A-list actor Margot Robbie’s complexion.

Famously dedicated to her craft but tight-lipped about her personal life, the 31-year-old is actually very forthcoming about her beauty routine. So, lucky for us, Robbie has gone on the record plenty of times to divulge her favorite cosmetic products and how she stays so fresh-faced despite her grueling travel, filming, and producing schedule – not to mention whatever other things she has on her plate.

In true Australian fashion, Margot keeps it laidback when it comes to her real-life makeup preferences, even at big events like premieres and award shows. 'I always end up wearing more monochromatic, natural looks,' Robbie has said.

Simplicity rules for her skincare, too, which makes it so easy to stick to and adopt, if you want to try to get Robbie’s signature gorgeous glow. Here’s how to play up your own best features with her tried-and-true tips.

She never goes to bed with makeup on

Multitasking is the name of Robbie’s game, at least when it comes to washing her face. 'I always start by cleansing in the shower – I don’t do too many steps because I genuinely don’t have that much time, but I’m anal-retentive about having really clean skin,' Robbie told Vogue UK. 'Especially with my job, where they just layer makeup on and on and on.'

For face wash, she’s partial to Dr. Lancer’s The Method Cleanse and never skips a scrub sesh, even if she’s tired from a long day of filming or partied a little too hard. “No matter how drunk I am, I absolutely will not go to bed with my makeup on—I will not,” she has said.

She loves to indulge in a face mask

Robbie knows prepping skin is super important, so whenever she’s getting ready to film or primping for a big event with her favorite makeup artist, Pati Dubroff, she takes the time to get in a little bit of skin prep. When on location for the indie flick Terminal getting her hair done, she told Harper’s Bazaar that she would often take the time to put on Talika’s reusable under-eye patches to depuff her orbital area before getting her “face” on for the day. Dubroff also got her hooked on Skin111 sheet masks, which Robbie told Vogue UK she often does before big events while in the makeup chair as well.

She’s all about a minimalist makeup look

When Vogue UK asked Robbie what beauty advice she’d give her 16-year-old self, her immediate answer was to wear less makeup, especially because she favors an au naturel look these days. 'I remember hitting that age and thinking I needed to wear tons of makeup because I was old enough to wear it,' Robbie said. 'I think it’s a confidence thing – you have your mask on all the time. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten more confident to wear less. Now I’ll happily just go for dinner wearing tinted moisturiser.' What tinted moisturizer, you ask? Robbie prefers Laura Mercier’s classic formula or Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation, which she cuts with a little bit of moisturiser, for everyday use.

She’s not a lipstick person

The key to nailing Robbie’s signature no-makeup makeup 'off duty' look as outlined above? Unless she’s walking the red carpet or required to rock a bold lip for work, she always chooses a tinted lip balm over lipstick. 'I don't like wearing lipstick because I get it all over my face, so I wear lip balm with a bit of a stain, like Burt's Bees or Fresh,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

She doesn’t skimp on skincare, even on her travel days

Hollywood stars do a lot of jet-setting, and as the world opens back up to trips and holidays again, you might find traveling takes a toll on your skin. Robbie doesn’t let recycled plane air get her down, though. Instead, she follows this simple pre-flight regimen to keep blemishes and dullness at bay. 'When I’m traveling on a plane, I’ll take my makeup off with a wipe and then I’ll use Peter Thomas Roth Complexion Correction Pads,' Robbie told Vogue UK.

'I honestly stumbled across them, and now I can’t live without them. Your skin is better after. They’re really strong.' She keeps them in a small cosmetics bag she always has packed for the plane, and it’s also stocked with mists from Aesop and Caudalie for in-flight hydration as well as a mini Klorane Dry Shampoo for quick hair fixes.

She knows the importance of a good night of beauty sleep

Robbie really prioritizes her rest, going so far as to rush home from set to get as much of a head start as possible on dozing off. That’s because she feels like getting sleep is important to her overall well-being and appearance. 'I feel like my body looks better if I get more sleep rather than an hour at the gym,' she told Harper’s Bazaar. Admittedly a bit of an insomniac, Robbie sometimes has trouble turning her brain off. So, she has a few tricks for getting quality shut eye: sleeping masks, soothing slumber music, and melatonin. She also loves cracking open a good book to get in a sleepy mood. 'I read Harry Potter before bed and it helps me switch my brain off,' she has said.
