Between the shiny, millennial-centric brands delivering fresh drops through your letter box, the more established, cult buys and the indie outfits selling a fine line in 'natural and organic' products, the beauty landscape has never felt more cluttered.
To help you to navigate this brave new world of retinol, AHAs, jade rollers and double cleansing, WH beauty editor, Perdita Nouril, is here to try and test the new drops that are making their way into her (very full) bathroom, via her column, Beauty Dispatch.
Every month, she'll share the freshly released heroes that she loves, ready to let you know where to spend your skin and hair care cash.
This month: Blunder Cover, the highly anticipated foundation-concealer hybrid from make-up artist Monika Blunder.
What is Blunder Cover?
I'll get straight to the point here guys, this is hands down of one the best base products I've tried in a long long time, and that's saying something, given that I've worked in the beauty industry for 10+ years.
So why has it got me so excited? Well, it conjures up all the words you want your base product to be associated with: Think 'flawless', 'seamless', 'glowy', 'natural' and 'long-lasting'. It sits perfectly between a foundation, a concealer and a contour cream – and, no matter whether you use it for full coverage or to conceal blemishes – you can expect a dreamy, natural finish.
So, who is Monika Blunder? Short story is that she's a make-up artist who began her career assisting the legendary Kevyn Aucoin and Paul Starr and has gone on to work on the faces of Megan Fox, Jessica Alba, Emilia Clarke and Gemma Chan, to name but a few.
After building a successful beauty channel on YouTube, Blunder went on to create her own make-up range, which landed in the US in 2020 and has just made its way to UK shores. Here's everything you need to know about the brilliance of her hero product...
5 reasons you need the Monika Blunder Foundation in your life
1. It's loaded with skincare
First up, there are some brilliant skin-loving ingredients in the formula that will do your dermis no end of good. This makes it a winner for those who don't like to ten-step beauty routine, and for those whose skin needs a little TLC. Ingredients include...
Arnica, a hero anti-inflammatory that works to reduce redness
Edelweiss, which keeps skin soft and supple
Aloe vera, known to attract moisture and plump skin
Sunflower extract, know to strengthens the skin barrier and keeps the skin smooth and soft.
Vitamin E. A known antioxidant that prevents and reduces damage to skin cells by neutralising free radicals (atoms found in pollution and UV rays).
Rosemary extract to calm the skin
Chamomile, which soothed and also works as an anti-inflammatory
2. It's a foundation and concealer
Sure, there are lots of products that are touted as 'hybrid' or 'multi-tasking', but this really does perform as both foundation and a concealer. The formula is supple enough so that it blends easily into your T-Zone or along your jawline, but gently pressing it into the skin with a brush or patting it on with your fingers means it genuinely works as a concealer, too.
Better yet it doesn't look obvious because it sits on the skin delicately, rather than gathering in fine lines.
3. A-listers love it
Blunder admits she always had an inclination towards minimal foundation and you can see that come to life via her work with Jennifer Garner and Emilia Clarke, who often sport 'barely there' dewy-looking complexions.
And big names are into the new drop: Already singing the praises of Blunder Cover are make-up artists such as Sam Chapman and celebs like actress America Ferrera.
4. It suits all skin tones
There are 14 different shades to choose from, which, compared to some ranges, doesn't sound like a lot. But these have been designed specifically so that they can be mixed and matched. The aim is to allow everyone to find their own unique, perfect, skin-identical shade – no matter what their skin tone. I'm a mix of 2.5 and 3, and it works perfectly for my skintone.
5. The brush is epic
I was surprised how much better the product went on when I used the Blunder Brush. To look at it, it doesn't come across as anything special, but don't be fooled. It has a knack for picking up and depositing the perfect amount of product, allowing you to blend with ease.
You also don't need to spend an age blending it all in – one or two sweeps and you're good to go. Plus, it's a good size for applying coverage to those hard-to-reach places such as around the nose and under your eyes.
Blunder Cover: The Verdict
Truly, every time I wear Blunder Cover I'm inundated with compliments on how good my skin looks.
This product delivers on all fronts, from the seamless buildable coverage to the fact that it lasts a good 6 to 8 hours without the need for touch-ups. For me, there is no going back.
