5 reasons to have more sex (besides the obvious)

You might think that sex is simply about connecting with your partner in a physical way, but it might also be good for your health too.

Here we look at five ways you can benefit from a roll around in the sheets.

It can be a great workout

If you’ve ever finished having sex and felt like, “phew, what a workout!” then you might be right. In 2013, scientists at the Université du Québec à Montréal found that men can burn approximately 100 calories per 30-minute session, with women burning around 70 calories.

Of course, don’t cancel your gym membership just yet but bear in mind that sex is exercise, exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy. Win, win, win.

It can act as pain relief

A team of neurologists from the University of Munster in Germany, found that headaches and migraines can be partially or completely relieved with a little sexual activity.

The study found that 60% of the group saw improvements in their migraine attack when they engaged in sexual activity.

The study also revealed that some of the men included in the research used sexual activity as a therapeutic tool.

So next time you get one, maybe try going to bed in a different way.

It could boost memory

According to an Australian study at the University of Wollongong, sex could be good for your short-term memory. The study found that adults over 50 who had sex regularly were better at remembering recent events than those who didn’t.

Research at McGill University in Canada tested women under 30 and found that the cognitive recollection of those who had more regular sex was better than those who didn’t.

It can help you get to sleep

The cliché of men falling asleep is often a myth. But if it wasn’t, they could point to science to explain why.

There’s a reason you feel tired after sex and it’s not just the physical exertion (or laziness).

During sexual arousal and after orgasm, your body releases a hormone called Oxytocin, which makes you feel relaxed and sleepy. So, if you’re struggling with sleep, sex might just be the best medicine.

Sex is enjoyable

Sex should be fun and enjoyable for both you and your partner and (as we looked at above) it could be good for your mental and physical wellbeing too.

If you do suffer from medical conditions that could make it more difficult to enjoy sex, it’s a good idea to try and solve any issues you have earlier rather than later.

One of the most common sexual medical conditions is erectile dysfunction (4.3 million men in the UK experience erectile problems*). If you’re struggling with erectile dysfunction, you might want to ask a pharmacist about VIAGRA Connect®, which is available without a prescription in the UK to help men with erectile dysfunction and is available to buy from the Pharmacy and registered online Pharmacies.
