When it comes to houseplant trends, you don’t need to look much further than Instagram. While TikTok dominates lifestyle trends and Pinterest has a firm hold on the design industry, Instagram is where it’s at for plant lovers.

“It’s so interesting to me how many people I talk to who say they were never into plant XYZ until it exploded on Instagram, and then suddenly they feel like they have to have it because they don’t want to be left out,” says Justin Hancock, horticulturist at Costa Farms.

As a houseplant lover, I can attest to the power of Instagram’s influence on my plant collection. The app helps introduce me to new varieties, showcase the beauty of some classic favorites, educate me about how to care for them best and demonstrate how houseplants can be seamlessly integrated into existing decor.

So, what houseplants can we expect to see all over Instagram in 2025? I asked a few houseplant experts what plants they predict will be big on the app in the new year. In general, they agreed that popular varieties will likely fall into one of two categories: timeless and easy to grow plants and plants with unique foliage features (such as variegation, fenestration, or colors). Based on these themes, here are their top five plant predictions.

Anthurium clarvineum

Foliage anthuriums are all the rage with collectors, but the anthurium obsession is slowly trickling down to regular plant parents, too, says Hancock, namely, through the Anthurium clarvineum. For those who haven’t jumped headfirst into growing Anthuriums, this variety is a good one to start with, and you’ve probably seen them all over Instagram already.

“It’s got heart-shaped leaves with velvety texture and white veins. Pure drama! It photographs beautifully — an Insta essential — and it is a cute addition for plant lovers who’ve already mastered other go-to pretty plants like fiddle leaf figs,” says Valeria Nyman, houseplant expert and chief product officer at Taim.io, an online gardening and houseplant coach/resource.

Due to their specific care needs, anthuriums are generally not considered “beginner” houseplants. They do best in tropical temperatures and humidity levels, often requiring greenhouse cabinets or tents so growers can monitor conditions carefully. Naturally, this makes these plants more popular among collectors and hardcore enthusiasts, but more and more novice growers are also trying their hand at growing them.

“Everyone wants a chance at enjoying and showing off leaves that are this beautiful,” Hancock says.

Monstera Thai Constellation

Monstera Thai constellation has been the “it” plant for a few years now, and experts agree it’ll remain popular in 2025. This variegated cultivar of the much-loved Monstera deliciosa produces large, highly variegated, highly fenestrated leaves that give instant jungle vibes. Up until late 2023, getting your hands on a Monstera Thai constellation was nearly impossible, but increased production has made them more widely available, meaning even novel growers can add one of these beauties to their collection. Even stores like Costco and Walmart have started selling them!

“It’s the ultimate Instagram plant,” Tchenawou says. “Its creamy-white variegation feels timeless yet modern, making it a go-to for anyone who wants their space to feel sophisticated.”

Plus, while the plant’s rarity earned it a reputation for being high-maintenance, in reality Thai constellations are pretty easy to grow. Like regular Monstera deliciosas, they thrive with medium to bright indirect light and average humidity levels. They are, however, more sensitive to overwatering, meaning they kind of thrive on neglect. Water them once the soil has dried out, and your plant will be happy.

Hoya callistophylla

Hoyas are steadily gaining popularity, and in 2025, Tchenawou says the Hoya callistophylla will catch people’s eye on Instagram. This rare plant is characterized by long, trailing vines and thick, lime-green waxy leaves with dark green veining. It’s perfect for adding some contrast and interest to your space, and it photographs beautifully, making it a no-brainer for people’s Instagram feeds.

“It’s the kind of plant you don’t see everywhere, which makes it perfect for collectors. … At the same time, it’s perfect for beginner plant parents who want the illusion of being experts,” Tchenawou says.

That’s because this hoya is surprisingly easy to care for. Like most hoyas, it does well in standard household temperatures and humidity levels, and it enjoys drying out thoroughly between waterings (those succulent leaves make it naturally drought-tolerant!). The only trick to keeping this plant happy indoors is ensuring it has enough light. A bright, sunny window is perfect, and if you’re lucky, it may even reward you with some gorgeous, sweet-smelling flowers in the spring and summer months.

Pothos Shangri La

Pothos are some of the easiest houseplants to care for, so it is no surprise that experts predict these plants will remain popular in the new year. From traditional golden pothos to newer varieties like Lemon Top, Hancock predicts we’ll see all kinds of pothos on our feeds in 2025. However, he points to the Shangri La pothos as the trendy variety that will pique people’s interest the most.

Pothos “Shangri La” is an Epipremnum cultivar created by Japanese grower Terunoworld. It’s characterized by rich green leaves that stay partially curled inwards along a long trailing vine. While some have compared its appearance to cooked spinach (honestly, I can see it), there’s no denying its eye-catching and novel look.

Shangri La pothos have been around for several years now, but they have recently become more widely available, meaning growers can now find one of these unique plants without having to pay an arm and a leg for it. Hancock says this increased availability will make the plant even more popular online.

“This gives plantfluencers who invested in them an opportunity to show off their larger, more established specimens and give plant parents who are just acquiring these rare varieties some beautiful inspiration,” he says.

The best part about this eye-catching plant is that, like most pothos, it’s super easy to care for. So, if you want to add a rare-looking plant to your collection in the new year but don’t want to deal with a high-maintenance diva, then the Shangri La pothos is for you.

Monstera esqueleto

Lastly, Tchenawou predicts that some rarer and more uncommon Monstera will also be popular on the ’gram — in particular, the Monstera esqueleto. This stunning plant also made the list of most popular Instagram plants of 2024, and it’s not hard to see why. Its massive leaves and intense fenestration give it an exclusive look and feel, making it popular among collectors and plant enthusiasts. If you want to create an indoor jungle, you simply can’t skip adding this Monstera to your collection.

That said, unlike the Thai constellation, the esqueleto remains relatively rare, expensive, and difficult to find. Honestly, this only adds to its appeal and exclusivity. However, if you can get your hands on one, you will be pleasantly surprised to find this plant is easy to care for despite its rarity. It grows quickly, does well in average household conditions, and prefers to dry slightly between waterings. Add this one to the houseplant bucket list for 2025!
