With trips abroad currently banned and 14-day quarantine rules for returning Brits in place, summer getaways could be a write-off.

Staycations might be our best bet for the warmer months when we're allowed but come winter, the travel industry might have just opened up, leaving us ready to hit the extreme cold on a fantastic snow holiday.

No-one knows when we'll be able to take to the skies for a trip abroad again but looking ahead to the end of this year and 2021 allows you to plan safer and possibly have that once-in-a-lifetime winter experience you've always dreamed of.

Why choose a snow holiday?

Aside from giving you something to look forward to right now, thinking about holidays in winter 2020/21 gives you plenty of time to both dream and plan. You can browse holidays and pin ideas to your Pinterest board, while collecting the icy experiences you wish to try (husky sledding, anyone?).

When the government gives Britons the go-ahead to travel and it's safe to put your planning into practice, you'll know exactly the type of trip you'd like to take.

Snow holidays, in particular, are the ideal way to celebrate winter in style. Winter sun is a fine way to escape, but you can't beat wrapping up warm to try the unique adventures you can only have in the snow.

One of the best things about snow holidays are that there are many in Europe, too. You don't have to fly all the way to the Caribbean or take a whole fortnight off from work either as some of the best ones take place over just a few days.

Where are the best snow holidays?

Lapland is a classic snow holiday destination for Brits. It's not just for kids as there are plenty of activities that go beyond visiting Father Christmas, such as watching the Northern Lights, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Both Finland and Sweden offer snow holidays packed with things to see and do in Lapland, plus unusual places to stay like ice hotels and glass-roofed igloos.

Norway is another epic location for a snow holiday in winter: think tranquil fjord cruises to witness the snow-capped mountains, the Northern Lights and vibrant cities.

Then there's Iceland for the sheer beauty of its unique landscapes. Black sand beaches, frozen waterfalls and hot springs to bathe in with the snow all around you – it's the place for a snowy adventure like no other.

Elsewhere, Canada is a great place to splurge on a snow holiday in winter, when Niagara Falls freezes over and you can take in the magic of the must-see site.
