A whole bunch of recent studies have found that coffee is actually pretty good for your life expectancy, youthful looks and general health.

But that isn't much use when you're three espressos down at 10am, panic levels soaring and feeling a little bit depresso, am I right?

If coffee turns your morning into something more like Minority Report than a manageable experience, here's some alternatives to get the zen back into your A.M - will still feeling some pep.

Green tea

Green tea is packed with antioxidants which help boost your general immunity and ability to fight illness. Not only that, but it does contain caffeine - less than a cup of coffee but enough to give you energy in the morning without the sweaty nerves.

Wheatgrass juice

If you're keen to forgo caffeine entirely, try drinking blended wheatgrass which will give you a hit of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The juice digests quickly and contains B vitamins which convert the carbs in food into energy in your body.

Protein-rich breakfasts

If we lost you a bit there with the idea of slugging back some green goo in the morning, perhaps a breakfast tweak is more up your street. Carbs like toast are all well and good, but having a protein-heavy breakfast not only keeps you fuller for longer but provides sustained energy throughout the day. Eggs are a great source of energy, containing roughly six grams of protein per egg which keep your blood sugar levels stable, preventing that mid-morning energy slump.

Smoothies or spreads containing nuts

Nuts are another great nutrient to include in your morning routine if you want to stay awake throughout the day. Include them in a smoothie or have some nut butter which will elevate your blood sugar levels for longer rather than spiking them short-term like sugary cereal or toast might do.

Chew gum

If the above all seems a bit too healthy or time consuming methods for your tastes, here's the trick for you. Researchers in Wales found that subjects who chewed gum were more alert and reported more positive moods than those who didn't. Maybe keep a pack on you just in case.
