In your 40s, you’re in the prime of your life. You might be starting a different career or thinking about retraining. You may be dating, getting into a new relationship or making plans with a long-term partner, seeing your kids off to uni or raising a young family. There are no rules – and whatever you’re doing, your life is likely to be full and busy.

This is also the decade when you’re most likely to start going through perimenopause*, the transitional phase before your periods stop (a clue can be your cycle becoming shorter or longer, heavier or lighter). Lots of women say this time is an opportunity to re-evaluate their lives and think about what is – and isn’t – working. That also goes for your wellbeing. To support your health, it’s worth paying attention to the main building blocks of wellness. Always talk to your GP if you're struggling, but here are some top tips to get you started:

1. If you need help to support your mind...

Perimenopause* could definitely be a factor. Make sure your diet is full of foods known to help support the brain, such as fatty fish and green leafy vegetables. You could also add extra support with a supplement such as Femarelle Rejuvenate containing Vitamin B7, known to contribute to normal psychological function.

2. If you notice your body temperature is fluctuating...

You won't be alone. Lots of women at this stage experience feeling hotter than usual, especially at night. During the day, wear loose clothing in natural fibres such as cotton, which allow skin to breathe (check labels to make sure they're 100% natural rather than mixed with synthetic fabrics which can trap heat), and dress in layers which you can remove if you need to. If you're at work or with friends, ask to sit near an open window in meetings. At night, switch up your bed linen to natural fibres too – bamboo is especially good, and eco-friendly to boot, and invest in a fan to have next to your bed.

3. If you want to feel less tired...

Feeling exhausted during the day? The combination of busy life and perimenopause* – as well as disturbed sleep if you're feeling hot at night – means you might feel the need to give energy levels a helping hand. Though it might be the last thing you feel like doing, try incorporating exercise in your day – it will boost oxygen circulation in your body and use energy more efficiently (weight-bearing activities are especially good for healthier bones). Prioritise sleep, making sure your bedroom’s cool, quiet and dark, and take time to wind down before you fall into bed. And look for a tailored supplement such as Femarelle Rejuvenate containing Vitamin B7, which contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, and Vitamin B2 which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

4. If your skin needs some TLC...

For some women, skin can be negatively impacted at this stage. You may even find your skin suddenly becomes sensitive to products you’ve used for years. Show it some love with a diet rich in skin-supporting nutrients, including plenty of Vitamin B7, which can be found in walnuts, peanuts, cereals, salmon, mushroom and cauliflower to name of few. You could add in extra support with a supplement like Femarelle Rejuvenate, as it also contains Vitamin B7 which contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and hair.
