We found fall-ready frocks from Amazon, Free People, and more

Fall is arguably one of the most exciting seasons to dress for. Between chunky knit sweaters and cozy layers, there’s more of an opportunity to get creative with your clothes (and be comfortable at the same time) when the leaves begin to turn. A quick and easy way to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall is with a specific kind of dress — one that toes the line between seasonless and stylish, while still being layer-able, and most of all, comfortable.

We tapped celebrity stylists to clue us in on what styles we should be adding to our carts as we build our autumn wardrobes, and these are the 8 celebrity-worn trends that they advised us to keep an eye out for this season.

From the office to happy hour, brunch, and beyond, the blazer dress is a transition-season staple. This blazer mini from Amazon resembles America Ferrera’s buttoned-up look from the Barbie premiere and features a classic menswear design, secured by a double-breasted button closure, and features 9 color options, depending on your personal style (the hot pink hue fits Ferrera’s Barbie vibe perfectly). “For us, wearing a dress is all about the fit,” says stylist duo Danielle and Alix, who’ve outfitted the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Alix Earle. “Our style definitely leans more tomboy, so wearing a dress is a big step. We love a structured blazer dress for the best of both worlds.

This mini’s long-sleeve and leg-baring silhouette can take you seamlessly from the somewhat warm days of early October into chilly nights in December — all depending on how you style it. Add a pair of sheer, black tights when the weather starts to cool and a knee-high boot for an effortlessly classic look, or a pair of loafers and crew socks if you want to keep it casual. You’ll soon find that there are endless ways to make this blazer work in your wardrobe.

Patterned Dresses

While patterned dresses are nothing new, there’s a certain direction that stylists are seeing prints go in this season. “A floral with a darker background instantly takes a springier print and translates it into fall,” Vazzana says — a look that Victoria Beckham is known to favor. Her long-sleeved frock from a few seasons ago features a nearly identical print to the Gap Flutter Sleeve Smocked Midi Dress, a jewel-toned floral number with a dramatic ruffle neckline. Vazzana advises that shoppers “look for bold screen-printed prints that make a statement” this year, like mesh dresses with prominent florals or abstract nature-inspired maxis to stand out from the crowd. Aside from florals, Freedman is eyeing both stripes and Trompe L’oeil (optical illusion) prints “that accentuate the natural lines of the body” to shake up his clients’ fall wardrobes — think realistic-looking printed fabric and nautical sweater dresses.

Long gone are the days that denim was only for boyfriend jeans and frayed shorts, because denim dresses (and, really, everything else — take Julia Fox’s jean-loving style, for example) are making a statement this season. “I love to see a denim dress that is cleverly cut to move beyond its presumed capabilities,” says Mickey Freeman, stylist to Keke Palmer. Former First Lady Michelle Obama made a case for denim dresses at the US Open, donning an Oscar De La Renta medium-wash midi dress, but we found a version that’s just as cute from Old Navy. Throw on a cropped cardigan like Obama or layer a thin long-sleeve and knee-high boots underneath for an autumnal outfit that’s not only comfortable, but incredibly on-trend.

Satin dresses aren't a novel trend on the red carpet, but they’ve become versatile (and casual!) enough to be worn during any season — plus, they act as a great layering piece. In fact, both Freedman and content creator Caroline Vazzana call out the material as a must-have for their fall wardrobe, especially when it comes to dresses. “For colder fall months, I like to look for a thicker satin,” says Vazzana. The Everlane Satin Square-Neck Slip Dress serves as a more casual version of Anya Taylor-Joy’s evening look, which was expertly styled with an oversized blazer. Layer a thin turtleneck underneath for a little extra warmth or throw on a statement jacket like the Queen’s Gambit actress for a night out this fall. (You can even wear it on its own during the warmer months of the year.) “There is a quintessentially romantic vibe that satin seems to easily capture,” Freedman adds. “[It’s] perfect for the somewhat melancholic and nostalgic energy that intensifies as the autumn season progresses.”

Quiet Luxury Dresses

When Sofia Richie became a Richie-Grainge after her illustrious wedding this summer, the world stopped to watch — largely due to her carefully curated wardrobe during her French nuptials. The internet grouped her with the “quiet luxury” trend overtaking our social media feeds, inspiring a cataclysmic movement towards understated capsule wardrobes with touches of classic glamour, like Chanel-inspired tweed outfits to mimic the star’s timeless wardrobe.

The Coco Tweed Bow Dress from Pomander Place bears a resemblance to Richie’s Chanel maxi dress, just with a black and white houndstooth pattern that stylists recommend for the fall. Freedman calls out the classic print as a seasonal favorite that can “easily evoke an aristocratic yet slightly quirky feel” in any outfit. This loose-fitting dress hits all the other marks of what quiet luxury entails, according to Freedman: “a more fluid silhouette, more sparse embellishments, and a slightly darker color palette.” Pair with penny loafers or a knee-high boot for a look that screams “aristocratic autumn.”

Red Dresses

We’re hearing red is going to be a big trend this season, and we’re here for it,” says Danielle and Alix. Whether it’s fire engine red or a moody maroon, everyone from Kendall Jenner to Hailey Bieber can’t seem to get enough of this fiery hue as fall rolls around. “When going bolder with the colorway, we usually gear towards a more simplistic style of dress to balance it out,” the duo adds. The Free People Right This Way Bias Slip is the perfect piece to integrate into your closet this fall because of its easy, breezy silhouette that allows you to layer clothes over and underneath. Its simple bias-cut design is equal parts flattering and casual, making it easy to dress up or down depending on your outing. Throw on a long leather jacket and edgy boots like Jenner to turn this timeless dress into a fall fashion statement

If there’s one dress that stylists say you can count on wearing for years, it’s the LBD. Priyanka Chopra-Jonas made the case for long, sheer black dresses while stepping out for dinner in Santa Monica, but the silhouette is what caught our eyes for fall. The Abilene Midi Dress from ASTR The Label is a more opaque version of Chopra-Jonas' bodycon style, featuring a ribbed knit fabric for a little extra warmth and slight shoulder padding for structure. Make this look pop with an oversized blazer or leather jacket, Danielle and Alix’s go-tos, and grab a statement heel for a touch of color or texture. “As a rule of thumb, you can never go wrong with a little black dress,” Freedman reminds us.

‘90s Dresses

“Minimalist silhouettes from the ‘90s are certainly on the rise,” says Freeman, specifically spotlighting the column dress. He calls out the “sleek and classic streamlined silhouette” of this decade’s dresses as they experience a revival in 2023, specifically when it comes to maxi, midi, and mini styles. Zoë Kravitz was seen donning a classic column dress as she locked arms with Taylor Swift at Margaret Qualley and Jack Antanoff’s wedding, a look that can be easily recreated with a less-expensive lookalike. The Zesica Satin Strapless Dress gives a nod to the satin dresses that stylists recommend while falling in line with the ‘90s silhouette that’s trending for fall, all while being able to be dressed up or down with a ballet flat or high-heeled boot. At just $48, this is one of the most budget-friendly ways to recreate a celebrity look this fall.
