Choose the right parks for your group

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

Spanning approximately 25,000 acres, the Walt Disney World Resort is home to four theme parks – Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom – plus two water parks, so choosing the right parks for your group is key.

Magic Kingdom is a dream for character spotting and family-friendly classics, while Hollywood Studios takes you into the action with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. At EPCOT, you can eat your way around the world and dive into futuristic attractions, while Animal Kingdom delivers nature-inspired thrills.

Plan your visit

Walt Disney World® Resort

A well-planned visit can help you maximise your time at Walt Disney World Resort, with plenty of scheduled rests to avoid burnout. Begin by checking the Orlando crowd calendars, which display crowd levels, wait times and any seasonal or special events.

Once you've picked your vacation days, accommodation and parks, you can start researching Lightning Lane reservations, dining and ticketed shows like Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

There's an app for that

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Download the official My Disney Experience App to plan your Disney day like a pro. This handy app includes Disney's free 'Genie service', which creates a personalised itinerary and 'tip board' based on your interests and park preferences.

You can organise your Disney plans, purchase park tickets and book dining reservations in advance. Want your ride snaps? You can connect a Disney PhotoPass image to your Disney app and also redeem your Lightning Lane selections.

Choose a Disney resort for extra perks

Portia Jones

Consider staying at a Disney resort to maximise your park experience and get extra. Options range from themed hotels and deluxe resorts to villas and lodges, with benefits like complimentary park shuttles, extra park time, special discounts and early access to Lightning Lane reservations.

Guests also enjoy resort-only amenities, including themed pools, spas and on-site dining. Some hotels even offer character dining, like pancake breakfasts with Mickey and Minnie, making your stay just as magical as the parks.

Maximise your time with Lightning Lane passes

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Utilising Lightning Lanes – Disney's version of 'skip-the-line' – is the best way to cut down queue times and maximise your park experience. Available through the Disney World App, these passes allow you to select return time slots for eligible attractions in advance, avoiding the often hours-long lines for the most popular rides.

There are three types of Lightning Lanes: Multi-Pass, Single Pass and the pilot Lightning Lane Premier Pass. The Multi-Pass lets you book up to three rides in advance, while Single Passes allow you to reserve access to high-demand individual rides. Simply check in at the dedicated Lightning Lane entrance and enjoy a significantly shorter wait.

Master Multi-Pass Lightning Lane selections like a pro

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Lightning Lane Multi-Passes can be confusing for first-time users because ride selections are based on a tier system. The pass allows you to pre-book three attractions, but they must be chosen according to Disney’s tiered structure. Essentially, headline attractions like Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind are 'Tier One' while rides like Star Tours are Tier 2.

You can select one ride from Tier 1 and two from Tier 2, but to get the most out of your pass, book a Tier 2 attraction for as soon as you enter the park. Once you scan in for that ride, tier restrictions disappear, allowing you to swap your remaining choices and grab an available Tier 1 ride before they fill up.

Use Skyliner for fast and scenic park hopping

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Soar above the parks in a state-of-the-art aerial gondola with the free and convenient Disney Skyliner. Adorned with your favourite Disney characters and figures from park attractions, this swish lift system offers a scenic, queue-free way to travel from select Disney Resort hotels.

The Skyliner is also a great option for park hopping, allowing guests to travel between Hollywood Studios and EPCOT in under 15 minutes –one of the fastest ways to switch parks. However, to use this option, you must have already entered your first park for the day and hold a Park Hopper ticket.

Try the rope drop strategy

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Don't want to pay for Lightning passes for your favourite ride? Try the 'rope drop' strategy, where you arrive 30-60 minutes before a Disney park opens to take advantage of fewer crowds and shorter ride wait times.

First, choose your top ride in advance. When you arrive, head straight to the land or area where it’s located and queue behind the rope at the designated entrance. The moment the rope drops and the park officially opens, head straight to your chosen ride before the lines start building.

Use single-rider lines

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

If you don't mind riding solo, single-rider lines will get you on some of your favourite rides faster. These lines have their own entrances, and there's usually a sign next to the regular and Lightning Lane queues that point you in the right direction.

You can typically use this time-saving option at Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Expedition Everest and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Just a heads-up, single rider lines can be unpredictable – they might pop up or disappear on a whim.

Make dining reservations in advance

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Disney restaurants book fast, so you must make dining reservations in advance, especially for popular restaurants like Be Our Guest, The Boathouse and Cinderella's Royal Table. You can make reservations 60 days in advance through the My Disney Experience app or the Walt Disney World website.

Use rider switch to save time

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

Rider Switch is a total game-changer for families or groups with small kids in tow. If your child isn’t tall enough or keen on a thrill ride, this free Disney service allows one adult to wait with non-riders while the rest of the group enjoys the attraction – without having to queue twice.

Here’s how it works: when you arrive at the ride, let a Cast Member know you want to use Rider Switch. The first group rides while one adult stays behind with the child or non-rider. Once the first group finishes, the waiting adult can skip the line and ride immediately, using a special return pass.

Take advantage of early park entry

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

For extra time in the Disney parks, book a Disney Resort hotel and enjoy an early morning entry perk. Resort guests get a cheeky 30-minute head start on a Disney adventure with early park entry – available at all four Walt Disney World parks, including check-in and check-out days.

Extend your day with park hopping

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

With a Park Hopper ticket, you’re not limited to just one Disney park per day – you can visit multiple parks and make the most of longer opening hours. Once you've entered your first park, you’re free to 'hop' to another park later in the day.

This is especially useful since park hours vary. Animal Kingdom often closes at 6pm, while Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios typically stay open until 8 or 9pm. So, you could spend your morning meeting Disney characters at Magic Kingdom, then head to EPCOT in the evening to watch Luminous, a spectacular fireworks show over the lagoon.

Don’t overlook the food courts

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

For budget-friendly dining inside the parks, Disney’s food courts offer a quick, affordable alternative to table-service restaurants. At Animal Kingdom's Satu’li Canteen in Pandora – The World of Avatar (pictured), you’ll find customisable grain bowls inspired by Na’vi cuisine.

For classic theme park bites, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café in Magic Kingdom serves up burgers, chicken tenders and plant-based options, while in Hollywood Studios, ABC Commissary is a solid pick – offering options like shrimp tacos, curry chicken bowls and buffalo chicken grilled cheese.

Look out for surprising character sightings

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

Keep an eye out for spontaneous encounters in certain areas of the parks. While most Disney character meet-and-greets come with long lines, some characters roam freely, offering surprise interactions without the wait.

At Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios, Star Wars characters like The Mandalorian, Kylo Ren and Stormtroopers patrol the land, often engaging with guests in character. Over in Toy Story Land, you might spot Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear and even the Green Army Soldiers wandering around, ready for an impromptu photo or playful interaction.

Upgrade your visit with a Disney VIP tour

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

For the ultimate Disney splurge, book a VIP Tour and explore the parks with your own expert guide. This fully customisable, door-to-door experience lets you park hop, skip queues, meet favourite characters and even enjoy reserved seating for the fireworks finale.

VIP tour prices range from £355 to £710 per hour ($450–$900), depending on the season. You'll also need valid park admission for each park you visit, which isn’t included in the tour price. It's not cheap, but the guides are amazing, and walking right to the front of an hour-long queue? Priceless.

Check out special events

Walt Disney World Resort hosts many free and paid-for festivals, concerts, food and holiday shows. Popular events include Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

Expect even more magic with decorations, themed shows, food stalls and entertainment, as no one puts on a flamboyant holiday event like Disney. Remember to book tickets in advance as these special events have become so sought-after that people often plan their vacations around them.

Secure the best fireworks viewing spots

Walt Disney World® Resort

Fireworks are the perfect way to end a day at Disney, and the spectacular Happily Ever After show transforms the night sky with lights, lasers and stunning projections.

To see the show with a Cinderella castle view, you'll typically need to secure a coveted spot near the Walt Disney statue or at the front of Main Street at least an hour before showtime. For a stress-free experience, book a fireworks dessert party instead. Head to Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant and enjoy indulgent treats like chocolate-dipped strawberries, then grab a seat on the patio to watch the skies explode with colour.

Look out for free dining plans

Watch for when Disney’s Free Dining Plan promotions drop; they can help you save big on food costs. These limited-quantity packages are typically offered when you book a non-discounted Disney Travel Company package with a select Disney Resort hotel stay.

Dining meal plans usually include a selection of table-service meals, quick-service meals, snacks or non-alcoholic beverages. These deals sell out fast, so it’s worth checking Disney’s website regularly or signing up for alerts.

Plan your character meet and greets

Portia Jones

Use the My Disney Experience app to track down your favourite characters, check when and where you can meet them and even get step-by-step directions to character experiences.

For a surefire way to hang out with the Disney crew, book a character dining experience at eligible restaurants across the resort parks and hotels to enjoy a meal and a photo-worthy meet-and-greet all in one.

Feast on limited-time snacks and drinks

Disney is bursting with sweet treats and savoury snacks, including limited-time seasonal eats and exclusive festive treats. During autumn, you'll find an abundance of pumpkin-spiced snacks and spooky-themed desserts.

Christmas brings red velvet doughnuts, eggnog shakes and Mickey-shaped cinnamon rolls. Summer is when you'll find film-inspired food and drinks at Hollywood Studios. Limited-time food sells out fast – so use mobile ordering in the My Disney Experience app to grab them before they’re gone.

Meet rare characters

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Want to meet Disney's rarest characters? Unlike Mickey, Minnie, and the princesses – who appear regularly – rare characters are those who don’t typically have scheduled meet-and-greets in the parks. These could be classic characters from older films, villains, or fan favourites that only make special appearances at exclusive events.

Your best bet is to book ticketed events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, where you might encounter Cruella De Vil or Jack Skellington and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. For running enthusiasts, runDisney events – including the Walt Disney World 10K and Marathon – offer rare character encounters along the race route, like Robin Hood, Tarzan and Aladdin's Genie.

Catch rare parades

Findlay/Alamy Stock Photo

The renowned Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade rolls through Magic Kingdom at 3pm daily, featuring classic characters like Mickey, Minnie, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and Frozen's Anna and Elsa.

But if you want to shake things up, watch for special and rare parade announcements you won’t see every day. During Super Bowl celebrations, Easter and Mardi Gras, new themed floats and lesser-spotted characters descend on Main Street USA, creating a huge buzz. Check the My Disney Experience app and event calendars to find out when they occur.

Enjoy free Disney campfires

yunha Park/Unsplash

A lesser-known family-friendly perk at many Disney Resort hotels is the complimentary campfire experience available to staying guests. These relaxing, evening gatherings invite families to roast marshmallows, listen to stories and join in classic sing-alongs around a crackling fire pit – all at no extra cost.

For an extra touch of Disney magic, Fort Wilderness takes it a step further with Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long, where the beloved Rescue Ranger duo make a special appearance, posing for photos and leading the fun.

Save money with free Disney transport

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

Skip expensive car rentals and utilise free Disney transportation to save on travel costs. Guests at select Disney resorts can travel to and from all four theme parks via complimentary bus, boat, monorail or the Skyliner gondola.

Free transport runs from 45 minutes before the parks open until an hour after they close, giving you a full day of magic. Head to marked pick-up points; your free ride will typically arrive in just a few minutes.

Skip the lines with mobile ordering

Perry Merrity II/Unsplash

Use Mobile Ordering through the My Disney Experience app to save time queuing for selected food and drinks. Open the app on your smartphone, tap '+' at the bottom of your screen, select 'Order Food' and pick your dining spot.

You can choose your meal, drink or snack, set an arrival time and pay by card, Apple Pay or Disney dining plan. Once your food’s ready, you’ll get a notification ping, and all that’s left to do is head to the 'Mobile Order Pick Up' counter and bypass the regular lines.

Stay fully charged

Between snapping #magic photos, using maps, the My Disney App and mobile orders, long days at Disney can quickly drain your phone battery. Pack a portable charger or buy Disney's handy FuelRod service to keep your device fully juiced.

These paid-for charge packs and cables are your pocket-sized lifesavers for phones running low on power. Trade your empty FuelRod for a fresh, fully charged one at FuelRod kiosks scattered throughout the Disney parks and resorts.

Order secret menu items

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

Did you know that some Disney restaurants have secret menu items you can hunt down? These exclusive eats have gained cult status among hardcore fans and won't be listed on regular menus as they pop up unexpectedly and can vanish just as fast.

Popular secret food items have previously included Galaxy Loaded Fries at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Café, Brazilian cheese bread at Skipper Canteen and PB&J milkshakes at the Tune-In Lounge. Search for #disneysecretmenu on social media or politely ask a Cast Member to learn where these covert foodie finds are.

Enjoy Michelin-starred cuisine and fireworks

Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World® Resort

For an upscale fireworks-and-food experience, head to Michelin-starred rooftop restaurant and bar Capa Steakhouse. Housed atop Disney's Four Seasons Resort, this 17th-floor gem serves Spanish-influenced cuisine, seafood and flame-grilled meats while offering panoramic views of Magic Kingdom’s nightly fireworks. Time your meal right, and you can enjoy crafted cocktails on the terrace as the evening show kicks off.

Visit during Disney after-hours

Portia Jones

Portia Jones

Disney After Hours Events are not to be missed. Running from 10pm to 1am, these special, ticketed events allow you to stay in Disney Parks after dark, meet characters and enjoy rides without crowds.

Held on select nights, they usually pop up during quieter, off-peak times, with new dates typically dropping throughout the year. Book a Disney After Hours ticket at Magic Kingdom, and you'll also be treated to the dazzling Disney Enchantment, an exclusive nighttime fireworks show.
