The Carolina Hurricanes have added to their draft capital.

Carolina landed three picks — including selections in the second, third and fourth rounds of current and future NHL drafts — from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenseman Tony DeAngelo only minutes before the second round began in Montreal.

It's being reported that DeAngelo, a restricted free agent, will sign a two-year extension worth $10 million in Philadelphia. He was given the freedom to negotiate freely with interested parties after the Hurricanes signalled in the offseason they were prepared to move on.

In some ways it's surprising the Hurricanes were looking to end the partnership with DeAngelo. Carolina was one of the few teams willing to take a chance on DeAngelo last summer, and the defender had an extremely productive season with the Hurricanes as a buy-low candidate, scoring at an elite rate. He was a major part of the team's offense, contributing 1.5 points per 60 minutes — which ranked eighth among full-time defensemen league-wide in 2021-22.

Of course, DeAngelo's value is diminished by the baggage he carries. His character issues have long been discussed, and his self-sabotage has plagued him since prior to his NHL career. DeAngelo is just one season removed from being banished by the New York Rangers and bought out of a lucrative contract.

DeAngelo will likely shoulder much of the offensive-focused minutes for the Flyers' blue line, but he may have to take on a far greater role in Philadelphia. The Flyers' blue line, which is led by two defensemen who have not grown into the players many expected them to be in Ivan Provorov and Rasmus Ristolainen, has been a sore spot for several seasons.

It's John Tortorella's responsibility to sort out the mess in Philadelphia, and DeAngelo will make a second highly-combustable personality in the room.

Carolina did not make a selection in Round 1 of the NHL draft, choosing first at No. 60 — on Russian forward Gleb Trikozov — with the trade chip acquired from the Flyers.
