Government ministers' pleas to avoid panic-buying ahead of the new lockdown in England appear to be going unheeded.

Instead, shoppers appear to be stockpiling essential items before the new restrictions come into force on Thursday.

Footage captured in Birmingham appears to show people packing bottled water and toilet paper into shopping trolleys.

Long queues have also been seen outside supermarkets, despite the fact that they will remain open throughout the forthcoming lockdown.
