This is the nail-biting moment a driver dodges a van hurtling down the wrong side of the motorway in what they described as a "fatal accident avoided by inches."

Footage from October 5 shows the incident on the M23 southbound near Crawley, where the driver narrowly avoids the oncoming car as another vehicle in the central lane speeds ahead, giving them room to dodge a head-on collision.

The person who captured the incident on dashcam explained: "There were vehicles next to me in the other lanes so they couldn't create space for me.

"I had to slam on my brakes then swerve to avoid a head-on collision.

"Afterwards I was shaking and my heart was pumping.

"I called 999 and they said they had been having reports of the same thing.

"Hopefully, no one was hurt after I passed him, it could easily have been a fatal accident."
