Boat explodes and catches fire at Sunderland Marina

There was drama at Sunderland Marina as a boat dramatically caught fire.

The whole area plunged into darkness as clouds of black smoke billowed to the sky.

According to the Sunderland Echo, the blaze spread across three boats - causing one of them to sink.

The fire was believed to have started due to an electrical fault.

A spokesman from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "One boat, 16ftx20ft, was on fire, it spread to two nearby vessels of a similar size.

"The first boat was 100% severely damaged by the fire and sunk. The second was 50% severely damaged by fire and the third was 30% severely damaged.

"Crews used one jet to extinguish the fire and the thermal image camera.

"The cause is believed to be electrical and accidental."

No-one is believed to have been injured in the blaze.
