Hiker rescued after being swept into whirlpool in California
An off-duty police officer rescued a hiker who was swept into a whirlpool in California.
The Madera County Sheriff's Office said the incident began when the 24-year-old man misjudged the flow of the water when walking across Willow Creek near Angel Falls, Bass Lake, resulting in him being swept into the whirlpool.
An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer, trained in search and rescue, was also hiking in the area and happened to be carrying a rope.
Officer Brent Donley was able to pull the man to safety with the help of other onlookers.
Police shared footage of the dramatic rescue, which was filmed by Officer Donley's wife, Christina.
