All the best films to watch in 2020

James Bond, Harley Quinn and Maverick will all make returns to the big screen in 2020.

The year will also see the return of Black Widow, Wonder Woman and Bill and Ted in a string of highly anticipated sequels and spin-offs.

Here is a look at some of the best reasons to go to the cinema next year.

1917 – January 10

Sam Mendes' First World War epic follows two British soldiers who are given the seemingly impossible task of venturing through enemy territory to deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men walking straight into a deadly trap.

Bad Boys For Life – January 17

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprise their roles as Miami cops who reunite when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus.

Bombshell – January 17

Charlize Theron plays Megyn Kelly and Nicole Kidman plays Gretchen Carlson in a story about the stars of Fox News who took down network head Roger Ailes after decades of sexual harassment.

Queen and Slim – January 31

Directed by Melina Matsoukas, who helmed Beyonce's Formation video, this drama about a couple on a first date whose lives are turned upside down when a police officer pulls them over stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith.

Birds Of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – February 7

Margot Robbie reprises her Suicide Squad role for a standalone film, which finds Harley Quinn after her split from the Joker and teamed up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

A Quiet Place: Part II – March 20

A sequel to John Kransinki's hit thriller find the Abbott family now facing the terrors of the outside world as they realise the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.

Mulan – March 27

Disney continues its run of live-action reboots with its retelling of the story about a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.

No Time To Die – April 2

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the long-awaited No Time To Die, but it seems the character is no longer a spy with a licence to kill. The first trailer for the film, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and co-written by Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge, shows him come face-to-face with the woman who appears to have replaced him as 007.

The Secret Garden – April 17

Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson-Burnett, this new version of the story about an orphaned girl who discovers a magical garden has been penned by Jack Thorne and stars Colin Firth and Dame Julie Walters.

Black Widow – May 1

Natasha Romanoff may have sacrificed herself during Avengers: Endgame but Scarlett Johansson's superhero finally gets her own spin-off to reveal what happened to her between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

Legally Blonde 3 – May 8 (TBC)

Reese Witherspoon confirmed she would reprise her role of Elle Woods with an Instagram video back in June but so far no plot details are known and the film is still in pre-production, so it is still uncertain if audiences will see the bend and snap again soon.

Fast & Furious 9 – May 22

While little is known about the plot of the ninth instalment in the Fast and Furious franchise, we do know Charlize Theron and Dame Helen Mirren are due to reprise their roles, alongside regulars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, while Cardi B will also make an appearance.

Wonder Woman 1984 – June 5

Gal Gadot is back as Diana Prince but this time it's the 1980s, with the hair and outfits to match. Chris Pine will also return as Steve Trevor, while Kristen Wiig joins the cast as Barbara Minerva.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife – July 10

After Paul Feig's all-female reboot was targeted by trolls online, Jason Reitman follows in his father Ivan's footsteps to direct a new Ghostbusters story, this time about a single mum and her two kids, who discover their connection to the original gang.

Top Gun: Maverick – July 17

More than 30 years after the first Top Gun film, Tom Cruise is back in the pilot's seat and reunited with Val Kilmer as Iceman. Miles Teller joins the cast as Goose's son Rooster, while Glen Powell plays Hangman.

Tenet – July 17

Almost nothing is known about this movie, which is par for the course for Dunkirk and Inception director Christopher Nolan, but we do know it stars Robert Pattinson, John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki and it revolves around espionage and time travel.

Bill And Ted Face The Music – August 21

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprise the roles they first took on in 1989 but this time they find themselves as middle aged fathers who are still trying to crank out a hit song.

Respect – August 21

Jennifer Hudson plays Aretha Franklin in his biopic about the legendary singer, which also stars Forest Whitaker, Audra McDonald and Titus Burgess.

The King's Man – September 18

A prequel to the Kingsman films starring Taron Egerton and Colin Firth, this film focuses on the origins of the independent intelligence agency and stars Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton and Rhys Ifans.

The Many Saints Of Newark – September 25

This Sopranos prequel looks at the formative years of Tony Soprano, starring the late James Gandolfini's son Michael as the younger version of the mob boss. Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga and Ray Liotta also join the cast.

Death On The Nile – October 9

This new telling of the classic Poirot tale boasts one of the starriest casts of the year, including Kenneth Branagh, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Annette Bening, Dawn French and Letitia Wright.

The Witches – October 16

Roald Dahl's most terrifying book gets a new big screen outing, with Anne Hathaway taking on the role of Grand High Witch.

The Eternals – November 6

Angelina Jolie ventures into the Marvel cinematic universe as Thena in this new blockbuster about a race of immortal beings who lived on earth and shaped its history. Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Gemmma Chan and Kumail Nanjiani also star.

Dune – December 18

A new adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel about the son of a noble family entrusted with the protection of the most valuable asset in the galaxy, starring Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson.

West Side Story – December 18

Steven Spielberg helms this new version of the 1957 musical about forbidden love amid gang rivalry. Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler play the star-crossed lovers.
