What does WiFi stand for? (It's not what you think)

It's part of our everyday life and vocabulary, but do you know what 'WiFi' actually stands for?

BuzzFeed notes that most assume that it stands for 'Wireless Fidelity' - and if you're one of them - you'd be wrong. While wireless fidelity sounds entirely logical, it is in fact, a random name made up by engineers.

Author Alex Hills told Scientific American that, the people who named it needed to come up with something catchier than the real technical designation, IEEE 802.11x.

So they came up with WiFi! The author notes that the name rolled off the tongue easier and sounded like HiFi, which does mean high fidelity in relation to sound systems.
