Hundreds of teeth removed from boy's mouth

A seven-year-old boy in India has had a total of 526 teeth removed from his mouth.

The youngster, named as Ravindranath, was brought to Saveetha Dental College in Chennai after he complained of swelling in his jaw.

Surgeons removed a hard structure, weighing around seven ounces, from inside his jaw.

When this was cut open, doctors found an unprecedented 526 tooth-like pieces, varying in size from 1mm to 15mm, each with a "crown covered by enamel and a root-like structure", the Independent reported.

The swelling was diagnosed as a "compound odontome" - a benign tumour which is linked to tooth development.

Ravindranath has made a full recovery and was able to keep his other 21 normal teeth.
