A Scottish man suspected of faking his own death in the United States to escape 24 rape charges in his home country has been arrested in Colorado, police said.

Kim Gordon, 55, from Edinburgh, was captured in Colorado Springs, Monterey County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

In February, police had received a report of a missing man off Monastery Beach, a picturesque spot that's also perilous because of deceptively strong currents.

'There was a lack of detail'

Police, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Coast Guard searched the area for three days after Gordon's 17-year-old son reported him missing.

"There was a lack of detail," Captain John Thornburg was quoted as saying in The Californian. "The son, who reported it, couldn't even tell us where he went in under the water."

After dismissing the son's claim as a hoax, US Marshals tracked Gordon to Colorado Springs following reports that has been driving a white Ford van in Monterey County.

He is being held in custody until his extradition hearing.
