Why Meghan and Harry unfollowed Kate and William on Instagram

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry unfollowed Kate Middleton and Prince William on Instagram -- but there's a good reason!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex took to their newly-launched Instagram page - which broke a major record the week is launched - on Tuesday, April 30, to reveal that they're rethinking the accounts that they follow on social media in an effort to raise awareness for the causes that they're most passionate about.

First up: Mental health. Harry and Meghan shared a post to remind their millions of followers that May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States and that the week of May 13 is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK.

"To pay tribute to all of the incredible work people across the globe are doing in this space, we are hoping to shine a light on several Instagram accounts that promote mental well-being, mental fitness, body positivity, self-care, and the importance of human connection - to not just hear each other, but to listen," the post read.

"There are countless organisations doing amazing work for mental health - please consider the accounts we've highlighted as a small snapshot of this global support network.

"We are all in this together. We invite you to explore the extraordinary stories of strength, and the commitment to kindness as seen in the above accounts.

"Each month we will honour this same concept and change the accounts we solely follow based on a different theme or cause. Please go to our homepage and click 'following' to see each of the select accounts and find out more about their work."

In accordance with their new approach to their Sussex Royal Instagram account, Meghan and Harry follow just 16 accounts, which is less than the previous 23 accounts they were following before this week.

Among the list of accounts that they are no longer following includes Kensington Royal (Prince William and Kate Middleton's official account, which Meghan and Harry used to share with them), Clarence House (Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla's official account), The Royal Family, Princess Eugenie and Prince Andrew.
