Russian ‘spy whale’ becomes local celebrity

A beluga whale that marine experts believe could be part of a Russian navy training programme has become a hit with locals in Norway.

Residents in Tufjord have been having a whale of a time with their guest, which is so tame it swims to the dock and allows people to feed and pet it.

Officials in Norway are investigating after the beluga whale was found wearing a tight harness, prompting speculation the animal may have escaped from a Russian military facility.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries said 'Equipment St Petersburg' was written on the harness strap, which features a mount for an action camera.
