Protester jumps in front of Theresa May convoy at EU

A protester attempted to jump in front of a convoy of cars carrying Prime Minister Theresa May to EU headquarters in Brussels where she was due for a day of Brexit talks.

The demonstrator was quickly moved away by another man and was uninjured.

Hector McGillivray, another protester at the small demonstration said he was opposed to May's visit. "She's coming here on a fruitless errand because I don't think she'll get anything," he said.

The incident occurred at the beginning of a key day for May in Brussels. Despite no apparent breakthrough over the controversial backstop, the PM has vowed to deliver Brexit on time on March 29, after agreeing a fresh round of talks to try to get her Withdrawal Agreement over the line.

Mrs May described discussions with EU leaders in Brussels as "robust but constructive" and insisted she was determined to "negotiate hard" over the coming days to secure legally-binding changes to the Agreement which will render it acceptable to Parliament.

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier will meet next Monday, while Mrs May and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker will have another meeting before the end of the month to take stock of the situation.

But European Council president Donald Tusk poured cold water on any expectation of an imminent end to the current impasse, saying there was "no breakthrough in sight".
