2018's biggest fashion stories, from the Queen at Fashion Week to Melania Trump's jacket

The fashion industry has a habit of reflecting what’s going on in the world and that’s arguably never been more prevalent than in 2018.

This year the sartorial decisions both celebrities and brands have made have been influenced by a desire to promote activism, acceptance and unity.

In January, A-listers from across the globe stood united against harassment in the entertainment industry at the Golden Globe Awards. Wearing all-black outfits and Time’s Up pins, they proved to the world they were a force to be reckoned with.

In February, Cara Delevingne stormed the Burberry runway at London Fashion Week in a rainbow cape in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Serena Williams stood up for mums in sport in August, when she responded to her catsuit ban by wearing a high-fashion tutu on the court. And in October, Princess Eugenie flew the flag for body-positivity in her backless Peter Pilotto wedding dress, which showcased her childhood scoliosis scar.

But not all of 2018’s fashion choices were positive ones. Melania Trump’s controversial clothing choices spurred conversations, throughout the year, about what a woman in such a position of power should wear in public.

Elsewhere, here in the UK, royal fans couldn’t get enough of Meghan Markle’s covetable wardrobe, with the newest addition to the Windsor clan stepping out in one must-have ensemble after another.

But it was her Givenchy wedding dress reveal and surprise appearance at The Fashion Awards that really hit headlines.
