Thieves demolished half a supermarket with a crane

Thieves demolished half a supermarket with a crane so they could steal the cash machine - through the roof.

Shocking footage shows thieves trying to steal the cash machine from a Sainsbury's Local in Headcorn, Kent just before midnight on Monday.

The vehicle rammed into the face of the building before lifting the cash machine and tearing it through the wall.

Thieves used the forks of the crane to lift the machine out - destroying the building and leaving debris strewn everywhere.

Structural engineers have been called to assess the state of the building and the road has now been closed by Kent County Council.

Police said the ATM was placed in the back of a silver vehicle which left in the direction of Headcorn aerodrome.

The crane used had been stolen from a building site in the area.

Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate have launched an investigation into the incident.

District Commander, Chief Inspector Mark Hedges told Kent Live: "This type of crime takes planning and has caused disruption to the local community.

"While investigators are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry, we are appealing for people to come forwards if they saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, saw the crane travelling through the village or a silver vehicle driving at speed through the rural area after the incident."

Anyone who has information or who has CCTV or dashcam footage that a may help the investigation is asked to call Kent Police on 01622 604100 quoting reference 19-1730.
