Last year saw Toyota knocked off its pedestal as the world's largest car manufacturer by the mighty Volkswagen Group, which defied the diesel scandal to sell more cars than any other in 2016.

But 2017's figures have seen another giant rise to the top – the newly formed Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Formerly the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the Japanese-French conglomerate acquired Mitsubishi amidst the brand's struggles with its own emissions scandal.
