Which companies are hiring seasonal staff?

Christmas is an expensive time of year, and a little bit of extra cash could come in handy for most of us.

Luckily, it's also a time when there's a bit more work than usual to be had.

Right now, everyone from supermarkets to online retailers is looking for extra help over the busy festive shopping period.

We run through some of the bigger firms looking for temporary staff.

Amazon
Amazon is taking on an extra 20,000 people for Christmas, working at all 16 of its fulfillment centres around the UK. Roles available will mainly be for warehouse operatives like pickers, packers and shippers, and pay starts at £7.65 an hour, with overtime at up to £16.40 per hour, depending on location. Marks & Spencer
Marks & Spencer has already taken on some seasonal staff for the run-up to Christmas, but still has room for plenty more. It says it offers competitive rates of pay, as well as a 20% discount on all in-store and online M&S purchases. Temporary jobs range from counter assistants to switchboard operators and even visual stylists. You can browse the list here.

Tesco
Tesco is recruiting extra staff around the country, with pay ranging from £7.50 to £8.18 per hour, depending on location. There are jobs across the board, from checkout staff to deli counters, and training is available. There's a list of opportunities here.

John Lewis
John Lewis warns that Christmas jobs are fast-paced, and says you'll need to be able to pick things up quickly. It's looking for both checkout and stock management staff and says you'll need to be flexible as jobs can include weekend, early morning and late night working. There's more information here.

Debenhams
Debenhams has 8,000 jobs going across the UK at all of its 175 stores. Successful applicants will start mid-November, working through to the new year, and earn £7.25 an hour. You can find out more and apply here.

Argos
Argos is hiring more than 10,000 people this Christmas, with jobs including customer advisors, stock assistants and delivery drivers. Temp workers will get a minimum of ten hours per week - six for weekend staff - and some will be able to move on to permanent positions. Pay starts at £7.31 an hour; you can fill in an application form here.

Next
Next has already started hiring extra staff for its Christmas Support Teams, but will carry on recruiting right up until three weeks before the big day. Experience isn't essential, it says. Staff earn £7.94 an hour an hour and get first choice of any sale stock as well as a staff discount once they've been in the job a week. Apply here.

Boots
Boots will be recruiting more than 2,000 Christmas staff, at stores all over the country. It's looking mainly for customer assistants and operations assistants, with most starting in early December. Check here to see if they're recruiting near you.

Primark
If you're looking for a Christmas job with Primark this year, you'll need to be available pretty much all the time, as there's a five over seven day weekly rota. It's filled a lot of positions already, but there are more on its website, here.

Royal Mail
Royal Mail has full-time and part-time positions available from early November through to December 23 at a number of locations across the UK. There's a list of positions here; pay starts at £7.92 an hour.

Toy Shop
The Toy Shop is already taking extra people on in the run-up to Christmas, but still has plenty more vacancies. Temporary jobs end on December 30. Most contracts are for 10 or 20 hours a week, although it's 37.5 hours for night shift workers. There's a 20% staff discount across the store, and you'll be paid fortnightly; check out what's on offer here.

Harrods
The luxury Knightsbridge department store must surely be the cream of Christmas jobs, and you'll need to be pretty impressive to nab one. It's looking for sales assistants, loyalty advisers and even Christmas grotto hosts, with most workers on 37.5 hours a week. Along with good pay, you'll get a whacking 33% discount across the store; find out more and apply here.
