Five best steam irons

Facing a huge pile of ironing can be one of the most daunting of household chores. Invest in a decent steam iron though, and you'll be powering through your laundry in no time. Here are five of the best steam irons to buy, for every budget...

1. Philips Easy Speed Plus GC2040/20 Steam Iron

As with many small appliances, it's not always that case that more expensive means better. Take for example the Philips Easy Speed Plus steam iron, which the Good Housekeeping Institute recently awarded 85/100 (coming in their top five steam irons) and outperformed machines that cost more than four times the price. Testers liked that it was quick to heat up with accurate temperatures and large 270ml water tank that lasted more than 18 minutes. The only slight negative is its lack of auto shut-off.

2. Lakeland Easy Fill Iron

Filling an iron with water can be tricky – especially when most of it runs down the side. Luckily, Lakeland has come to the rescue with its lightweight Easy Fill Iron that comes with a helpfully large opening. The iron also has a generous-sized water tank (that lasts 40 minutes before you need to re-fill it), and does a speedy job of banishing creases.

3. Braun TS745A TexStyle 7 Steam Iron

If you have a bit more money to spend, Braun's TexStyle 7 won't let you down. It scores well with John Lewis customers (getting 4.7/5 stars) and will speed through your laundry in no time. The scratch-resistant soleplate has a pointy precision tip (good for reaching under buttons and into tight pleats) and offers 12 minutes of continuous steam, with a handy steam boost function. It's a little heavier than some machines (at 2kg) but if you want performance and power, it's hard to beat.

4. Morphy Richards Breeze 300250

If you're on a budget (or like pink!) this is one of the best irons to buy. Users have given the Morphy Richards Breeze an impressive 4.3 out of 5 stars on Amazon. It heats up fast (on the 3-dot setting), and its 350ml water tank lasts for around 13 minutes of continuous steam ironing before it needs to be refilled. The stainless steel soleplate will breeze through your ironing pile, though some reviewers reported that the handle was a little hard and chunky, and the water spray button has to be pressed fairly hard.

5. Breville Press Xpress Steam Iron

Another mid-price steam iron that performs well (4.4 out of 5 stars on Amazon), this time in an attractive shade of purple. Breville's Press Express comes with a wide soleplate, precision tip and powerful steam function that will leave your laundry-wrinkle free in no time. There are a few niggles – it has no clip for storing the power cord neatly, it's a bit on the heavy side – but it's a good option for the money.
