An ex-council house on a picturesque stretch of the Cornwall coast has sold for a whopping £1.44 million at auction.

Sunset House sits on Porthmeor Beach in St Ives and sold for twice the asking price of £600,000 and four times the local average - making it the most expensive former council house in the UK.

Auctioneers Allsop said the area is naturally beautiful but has also become more popular thanks to the hit TV show Poldark.

According to the Daily Mail, Gary Murphy, partner and auctioneer at Allsop, said: "St Ives has always been a popular destination but the area has become increasingly sought-after.

"The 'Poldark effect' has no doubt helped to attract people to the town having highlighted the charm of the area."

The house is run down and in need of total modernisation, but, according to Cornish Stuff, the new owners are expected to demolish it and build a new property.
