Australia is a land where climate, landscape and geography combine to create an adventure playground like no other. The country's Northern Territory (or NT, as the locals say), provides almost endless opportunities to explore stunning vistas beyond the beaten track, and these two-week Northern Territory itineraries make the adventuring easy.

Australia's Northern Territory is untamed, unspoilt and unforgettable. This itinerary starts at Uluru, a sacred Aboriginal site and the definitive symbol of Australia. You may have seen it a hundred times on TV, but nothing prepares you for the stunning spectacle of the red sun setting over the great rock, or its magnificent silhouette against a vast, star-speckled sky.

Uluru and its environs can be explored on foot or by bus, Segway, camel or helicopter. You could also choose to see from the air while skydiving or more sedately, from a desert dining table. Once you've properly explore the area, next head to Kings Canyon, another incredible geological phenomenon in a region pockmarked with them. The Canyon's towering walls, dense palm forests and secluded waterholes are best viewed on the spectacular four-mile rim walk. Head out at sunset or sunrise to watch a kaleidoscope of colours sweep across the landscape.

You'll visit Alice Springs, a thriving town with a hip café culture in the middle of a desert. It's a wonderfully characterful place, and a great opportunity to pick up bona fide Aboriginal art. It's here you hop on board the legendary Ghan Train and embark on one of the greatest train journeys on Earth, where you can watch the orange-dusted landscape and its unique flora and fauna slip by from the comfort of your private sleeper cabin or the onboard restaurant car.

En route to Darwin, the picturesque town of Katherine is the gateway to the spectacular Katherine Gorge at the heart of Nitmiluk National Park. As you cruise its flowing waters, or walk one of its many trails, its towering orange walls remind you that, in Australia, the next great adventure is never far away.

Next stop is the Litchfield National Park with its stunning woodlands, waterfalls and tall termite mounds. Finally, head back to the city for a little R&R in Darwin a relaxed and charming city offering all year round al fresco dining, great shopping and museums.

This adventure starts with a period of acclimatisation in laid-back Darwin, where you can hop on a harbour cruise, dine at the waterfront, head to the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory or visit Mindil Beach sunset markets. Enjoy Darwin's tropical climate, melting pot culture and fascinating history, and take the ferry to the Tiwi Islands, 50 miles off the coast, where you'll create your own artwork during an art session with a local Tiwi artist.

Next is Kakadu National Park, home to rock formations, billabongs, waterfalls and cooling plunge pools, along with countless examples of incredible Aboriginal rock art, some dating back 50,000 years. You'll stay in both the Mary River Wetlands area – home to many of the area's saltwater crocodiles - and the heart of Kakadu National Park itself, overlooking the tranquil Yellow Water Billabong.

From Kakadu to Katherine, a quaint little town on the Katherine River and the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park and the spectacular Katherine Gorge. The gorge is an avenue of water hemmed in by towing, orange-hued cliffs, and best seen from the water. A NitNit Dreaming cruise lets you experience the awe-inspiring landscape while learning about its connection with the traditions and customs of the local Jawoyn people. There's ample opportunity to hike in the park, with plenty of trails cutting through the hauntingly beautiful scenery.

Litchfield National Park, which you'll visit on your way back to Darwin, is famous for its cascading waterfalls and dense, verdant forest. Walk its trails and look out for one of nature's minor miracles: the magnetic termite mounds are perfectly positioned in a north to south alignment to regulate temperature.

Back in Darwin, take time to absorb the memories of a truly magical country.
