North Londoners were surprised this week to find a giant 'Londonwood' sign appear outside Alexandra Palace.

The 10ft tall sign, in the same familiar font as the iconic 'Hollywood' sign in Los Angeles, was erected overlooking the capital ahead of this weekend's Empire Awards.

A host of homegrown and Hollywood stars will descend on Camden's Roundhouse on Sunday to celebrate the best of the past year's film-making.

The past 12 months has seen huge success for the British film industry, with estimates £1.6 billion was spent in the UK on feature films - a 13% increase from the previous year.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "The Three Empire Awards celebrate the best in cinematic achievement. From Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – London's film-making expertise is the envy of the world. The film industry contributes a great deal – both economically and culturally - to the life and soul of our capital.

"I'm committed to building on our success as a world-renowned powerhouse of film-making, ensuring the capital continues to flourish and making London the best, and most inviting place for film production on the planet."
