Leeks are relatively low in calories, often inexpensive, and, like their relatives in the allium family (onions, garlic and chives), they can provide a tasty savoury hit in a dish. They combine well with cheese, chicken (as in the video above), potatoes and ham for example.

But did you know that they also add beneficial soluble and insoluble fibre to your diet, and contain vitamins, antioxidants and minerals to your diet?

Like garlic, it's thought that much of their therapeutic effect comes from the compound allicin which has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties.

Allicin reduces blood vessel stiffness (lowering blood pressure), lowers cholesterol and decreases the overall risk of coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular diseases, and stroke.

So adding them to your dishes not only makes them taste great, they may help you live a longer and healthier life.

Make the most of leeks:
Crispy pork belly with leeks and pancetta
Cod with chorizo and leeks
Leek and pancetta quiche
Leek and Gruyere rosti with fried eggs
Leek, walnut and goat's cheese tart
Cock-a-leekie soup
Bacon, cheese and leek scones
Classic cream of potato soup
