Black Friday is an ideal time to be looking for an Xbox One or a PS4, because the experts are predicting a number of great discounts. The consoles were big draws in 2015, and are expected to be again this year, so what can you expect?

Xbox One

The Xbox one is likely to be at the centre of an offer frenzy, as retailers make way for the Xbox S. As Black Friday approaches, there are already some reasonable prices on stand-alone consoles - including £169.99 at Currys, and £179.99 at Miscosoft and Game. There's a good chance that we will see this discounted even further on the day.

If you are keen to use the opportunity to get your hands on an Xbox S, you are also likely to see some discounts, but they unlikely to be anywhere near as cheap as the older model.

Bundles are expected to offer some of the best value - with two, three or even four games packaged in with the Xbox. At the moment, for example, Currys is offering an Xbox One for £167.97 - which comes with a code that allows you to download your choice of game from Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5, Rare Replay, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition or Forza Motorsport 6.

It's therefore worth working out in advance which games are top priorities to be included in a bundle, so you are not tempted by the number of games on offer - only to discover that you don't like them all that much.

PS4

There may well be deals on the PS4 as the old console makes way for the PS4 Slim. Prices have already been dropping, so you can currently get a PS4 on Amazon for £224.99 or John Lewis for £259.95. At full price the Slim (500gb) is actually sometimes cheaper - including £217.99 from Amazon, but we can expect a gap to open up on Black Friday.

Again we can expect bundles to form the backbone of the best deals. You can already get a PS4 Slim cheaper though a bundle than most stand-alone deals, at Game, which offers the console for £229.99 - along with Star Wars: Battlefront, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Now TV.

Where?

Retailers we know already are taking part, and are likely to offer bundles, include: Currys, Amazon, Argos (although its early deals on consoles haven't been anything to write home about), Zavvi, John Lewis, Tesco Direct and Game.

In fact, Amazon has already run a number of Black Friday deals on PS4, including a 1TB PS4 with Uncharted 4, The Last of Us and Drive Club for £249.99. Alternatively there's a PS4 500GB with Fifa 17 for £232.99.

If we can take their behaviour so far as any indication as to the best deals, it's also worth keeping an eye on Game, which has been competing hard on all console bundles already in the run-up to Christmas, and is unlikely to take its foot off the gas for the biggest shopping day of the pre-Christmas period.

Zavvi is also talking-up its Black Friday offerings, so is worth a look. It adds that as well as the blockbusters it will be offering deals on independent games - which could be handy if you're after something a bit different.

Alternatively, if you were thinking of getting a Sky subscription, it's worth knowing that its Black Friday deal (running until 4 December) is offering a free Xbox One to anyone who joins.

Wherever you go, it's worth bearing in mind that Techradar is predicting that a number of retailers will only have a small number of deals on offer at the best prices on the day. If you want a console, therefore, it's essential to get up early on Black Friday and snap them up while they last.
