Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard have returned to Australia to face trial over allegedly smuggling the couple's dogs into the country last year.

The couple arrived at Coolangatta Airport on Sunday morning ahead of the four-day trial that begins on Monday.

Heard, 29, is accused of illegally bringing her two Yorkshire terriers, Boo and Pistol, into Australia on a private jet when she visited her husband while he was filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film on the Gold Coast last May.

ABC reports that Depp is believed to be a witness in the hearing but names of the witnessed have not yet been revealed.

Actress Heard faces two charges of illegal importation of an animal and one count of producing a false document.

It is alleged that she hid the dogs and falsified her arrival card to conceal their presence from the customs officers.

Brisbane Times reports that a dog groomer unwittingly alerted authorities when she posted pictured of the dogs on her Facebook page.

It led to Deputy Prime Minister Mr Joyce threatening to have the dogs put down if they were not flown back to America within 50 hours.

Under strict Australian laws, dogs entering from the Unites States must be declared and spend ten days in quarantine.
