The great rent divide: What £800 gets you around the UK

Most people know that London is one of the priciest places in the country to get your hands on a property, but it's not just home buyers who are having to fork out, the forecast is just as bad for renters.

Along with the help of StoreFirst.com we've taken a look at rental prices around the UK to see what you can really get for your money.

Unfortunately for London residents, it's not looking positive. The city has officially been announced as the worst value area in the country with the highest average rent in the UK at £1,150 per month.

For £800 per month you could get yourself a tiny room in a flat share in Whitechapel, East London.

Meanwhile, spending the equivalent amount of money in Manchester would get you a spacious three bedroom house.

But that's not even the cream of the crop. The study found that the city with the best value for money for renters was Sheffield. For just £675 per month you could get your hands on a three bed terraced house or for even less at £495, you could move into an unfurnished two bedroom house.

Spending £800 a month in Birmingham, meanwhile, will get you a two bed house with two reception rooms or you could spend £725 and get a two bed apartment with parking thrown in.

Hand over £650 in Leeds and you'll be living in a two bed, city centre apartment with a balcony.

Meanwhile in Edinburgh you could have a two bed flat with communal garden for £799 per month.

There's also a clear north - south divide when it comes to looking at average rental prices too.

After London the south east is the most expensive place to rent with average prices of £933 per month.

On the other hand, the three cheapest areas to rent are the north east at £528, Northern Ireland at £582 and Wales at £595.
