Most of us don't like using public lavatories. While there's not much that can be done about the cramped quarters, toilets on planes are set to become a whole lot cleaner.

Airplane-maker Boeing has come up with a new way to sanitize toilets on planes – eradicating pathogens with the power of ultra violet light.

The technology, which turns on the moment someone exits the toilet cubicle, lifts and then closes the toilet seat automatically and sanitizes all surfaces in just three seconds.

The non-harmful ultraviolet light (different from the UV rays used on sunbeds) is activated only when the toilet isn't in use, kills 99.9% of pathogens, and even helps get rid of unpleasant odours.

To minimise any contact with germs, the new loos will also feature a hands-free tap, soap dispenser, rubbish flap, toilet lid and hand dryer. And Boeing are looking into a hands-free door latch and vacuum vent system for floor spillage too.

"We're trying to alleviate the anxiety we all face when using a restroom that gets a workout during a flight," said Jeanne Yu, director of environmental performance for Boeing's commercial airplanes division.
