It might be your favourite past time, but how much do you know about the male orgasm? From the speed of ejaculation to the amount of time it takes the average man to climax, we reveal 11 orgasmic facts you need to know.
1. Orgasms are like heroin
A Danish neuroscientist ran brain scans on male volunteers as they masturbated. He found a huge surge of activity in the brain's 'reward' hub at the point of ejaculation – the same area stimulated by heroin use, proving that sex really can be active.

2. Pre-ejaculate CAN get her pregnant
You don't need to shoot your load to get her pregnant. According to a report published in the journal Human Fertility, more than 40% of guys produce pre-ejaculate that contains sperm. In fact, pre-ejaculate can contain up to 40 million of the little swimmers - and it only takes one to make a baby.
3. Two minutes counts as premature
Experts define premature ejaculation as sexual intercourse that lasts two minutes or less before climax occurs. Interestingly, two minutes of solo stimulation is the point at which most men reach "ejaculatory inevitability" (the point at which orgasm is inevitable), according to sex researchers Masters and Johnson.
4. Seven minutes is average
While you've got the stop-watch out, you might be interested to know that the average man takes seven minutes to orgasm through sexual intercourse.
5. Your fastest swimmers go first
When a guy climaxes, semen is released in waves with each contraction. And your best swimmers (the most mobile sperm with the highest quality DNA) go first, according to boffins at the Ginemed Assisted Human Reproduction clinic.
6. Super speedy ejaculation
Ever wondered how fast ejaculation travels? Watch Usain Bolt run the 100 metres. Usain holds the world-record running pace of 27.79 mph – while the average man's ejaculation travels at 28 miles per hour. After entering a woman's body, it takes around five minutes for sperm to reach the cervix.
7. Men can have multiple orgasms
Some 15-20% of men surveyed for the famous Kinsey reports (books on human sexual behaviour) claimed to have had multiple orgasms. While most mortals need 30 minutes to an hour's cooling off period, some guys can climax again after just 60 seconds (yes, seconds!) according to Masters and Johnson. These will be non-ejaculatory orgasms, though.
8. It lowers your risk of prostate cancer
Forget that rubbish about your eyes going funny. Men who orgasm regularly (around 20 times per month) are 20% less likely to get prostate cancer, according to research presented at the American Urological Association. It can be good for your heart, too. When men and women orgasm the hormone oxytocin is released, which helps lower blood pressure.
9. There's a reason you feel sleepy after
The brain releases a hormone called prolactin at orgasm. As well as shutting of your sex drive for up to an hour, it can also promote feelings of sleepiness. But that's no excuse for rolling over and snoring! Researchers in Scotland found that men and women release 400% more prolactin after intercourse compared to a masturbation-induced climax, which is why a post-nookie cuddle feels so good.
10. Some men don't enjoy orgasms
Spare a thought for men with "sexual anhedonia". Guys with this rare medical condition experience all the physical signs of orgasm - muscle contractions and ejaculation - but with none of the pleasure. Taking antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) may be one cause.
11. Men fake orgasm too
Women aren't the only fakers between the sheets. According to a survey of students at the University of Kansas, 28% of men had faked an orgasm during sex with a partner. Why you might ask? Being too intoxicated to climax and wanting to go to sleep were the most common reasons cited.
