According to the Elephant News, Thong Kam the elephant was used to entertain and serve people around Thailand for 50 years.

He has now been retired and will be cared for by the Save Elephant Foundation at the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai.

The Elephant Nature Park is home to more than 35 elephants, all of whom have been saved from horrible situations including the tourist industry and illegal logging activities.

Those visiting the area have the chance to interact with the animals at the nature park without exploiting them.

The ENP was founded over 20 years ago by Sangduen 'Lek' Chailert with the intention of letting these elephants live their lives freely and happily.

The park is also home to more than 350 dogs who were rescued after the devastating Bangkok floods in 2011.

According to their website, the Save Elephant Foundation is 'dedicated to providing care and assistance to Thailand's captive elephant population through a multifaceted approach involving local community outreach, rescue and rehabilitation programs, and educational ecotourism operations.'
