Micheline Roquebrune, wife of former James Bond star, Sean Connery, could face time in prison over tax fraud.

The actor's wife, who is 86-years-old, will be forced to face trial in Spain over the allegations.

Investigators in Spain are trying to prove that Roquebrune and Connery are in fact involved in a corruption scandal in Marbella that attempted to defraud the country's treasury of a staggering £5.5 million.

Lady Connery has also been accused of playing a part in tax fraud, if convicted she may face two and a half years in prison as well as a £16 million fine.

Although Connery himself was also initially being investigated he was cleared from trial last year after providing the court with a 56 page affidavit proclaiming his innocence, the Telegraph reports.

The magistrate dealing with the case said: "Although the delays may have harmed the progress of the case, it's also true that if the suspects had observed the proper rules of conduct, namely a minimum level of cooperation with the judicial authorities, the fate of those suspects would have been clarified more than two years ago."

According to the Daily Record, Roquebruneis alleged to have worked with both lawyers and businessmen to formalise 'fictitious legal transactions' so that profits gained from the sale of a house could be hidden from the taxman.

The house was subsequently torn down and flat, worth £45 million, were built on the site.

The case, nicknamed 'Goldfinger', will see 16 people sent to trial although a date has not yet been set.

The actor and his wife, who have been married for 40 years, currently live in the Bahamas where they, along with other local residents, are fighting the development of a nearby estate. The couple claim the extension would disrupt the nearby bay, the Daily Mail reports.
