Austrian grandmother rips up €950,000 fortune
A grandmother really didn't want her family's hands on her money, so she went to extreme measures to make sure they wouldn't get hold of it after she died.
The Austrian woman clearly didn't want her family to have a cent of her sizeable €950,000 legacy so she tore it all up!
Days before she died she cut all of the notes up into tiny pieces and left them on her nursing home bed.
Authorities think she did it to spite her family but they still don't know why. Apparently the woman would rather have chopped it up into tiny pieces than do something useful with it like giving it to charity.
Since destroying the money wasn't a criminal act there will be no investigation but the joke may be on her and not her jilted heirs.
The head of Austria's central bank said that as long as the heirs can find shreds of the money and prove where it came from they will have to replace it all and if they didn't pay up the money they'd be punishing the wrong people.
In the UK, under the Currency and Bank Notes Act 1928, it is not illegal to destroy banknotes but it is illegal to deface them.
Who knew that ripping up your own money just doesn't pay!
