McDonald's vs. Burger King

The rivalry between these two fast-food chains once got so overheated that McDonald's was forced to part ways with its ketchup. McDonald's stopped using Heinz brand ketchup, a long business relationship, just because a Burger King exec went over to Heinz. Burger King tried to set aside their differences by proposing a day of peace. The chain came up with the idea of the McWhopper, a hybrid burger taking the best of both chains' iconic recipes, combining them into one and selling them for one day only with all proceeds going to charity. Sounds like a good idea? McDonald's didn't think so. They said: "We love the intention but think our two brands could do something bigger to make a difference."

Dunkin' Donuts vs. Starbucks Coffee

When it comes to coffee, this is a classic east meets west brand and marketing rivalry. Dunkin' Donuts is the brightly coloured coffee chain where anyone can go, Starbucks is a little more upscale and upmarket with its special coffee names. So, Dunkin' Donuts roasted them with a controversial ad, making fun of the pretentious coffee names at Starbucks. Meanwhile Starbucks used their little sister, Seattle's Best Coffee, for their comeback.

Apple vs. Microsoft

This has got to be one of the longest running and best known rivalries in the business world. There's nothing like biting the hand that fed you - in the 1990s Bill Gates actually loaned money to Apple to keep the company afloat and now Microsoft is playing hard ball, using Apple products as a direct comparison in some of their ads.
