Shock Everton win brings £45,865 worth of good news for one punter

Kyle Jordan, a 30-year-old oil and gas worker from Fleetwood in Lancashire, has won just shy of £46,000, after betting £5 on a football accumulator bet at 900-1. The chances of him correctly predicting wins for Liverpool, Sheffield United, Bury, Cardiff, Reading and Everton (in which all the teams scored) were incredibly slim - especially when Everton was 2-0 down at half time on Monday.

The first four games came in with the right result, so it was all down to Everton beating West Brom. At that point Jordan would have been eligible to cash his accumulator in for just over £4,000 - and was even offered the chance to sell it Colossus Bets for £8,000. However, he told the Daily Mail he'd seen friends cash in and miss out, and he didn't want to be left kicking himself if Everton went on to win.

At half time, Everton were 2-0 down, and things didn't look good, but a fightback and a final winning goal from Lukaku in the 84th minute brought him the major payout. He told the BBC he wanted to celebrate by taking his children on holiday to America.

After the match, William Hill tweeted the winning betting slip, with the words: "Someone will be celebrating tonight, if they haven't had a heart attack watching that game. Congratulations."

Crazy odds

It's an impressive win, and at 900-1 it beat the odds in spectacular fashion. However, in the history of crazy odds, some even more outlandish bets have come in over the years. William Hill said the wildest they've ever seen was back in 2008 when a fertiliser salesman placed 50p on an eight-horse accumulator bet at 2 million-to-one. All his winners came in, and he walked away with £1 million.

In second place was a bet in 1984 which earned one lucky winner just over £86,000 from a 5p bet - at 1.67 million-to-one. And in third place was a man who won £500,000 from a 30p bet.

If you fancy trying some barmy odds, there are plenty on offer at the moment. You can bet on Robbie Savage to become the next James Bond at 250/1 at William Hill, Kate and William to have a third baby and call it Boris at 100/1 with Paddy Power, and for Andy Murray to call his baby Tim at 100/1 with Ladbrokes.

Of course, whenever you get anywhere near these kinds of odds, you know you are almost certain to lose, and as with any bet, you need to be sure you can afford to lose the money you are putting down as a stake.

Even if you don't lay any of these bets, surely if Robbie Savage was to become the next James Bond, everyone would be a winner.
