Many people (us included) will be pleased to know that beer brewing has been named one of the fastest growing sectors of the food and drink industry.

The number of UK microbreweries increased by almost a quarter last year – from 291 in 2013/14 to 361 in 2014/2015 – according to a report by accountancy group UHY Hacker Young. And the number of loan applications to HMRC to launch them has nearly trebled in the last five years.

So far it sounds like great news for a nation of devoted beer drinkers, as we hope to see more varieties of locally produced brews hitting our shelves and pubs.

But where are all these microbreweries popping up? And what exactly are they making? Here are just a few examples...

1. Camden Town Brewery

2. Hardknott

These ales might be influenced by world beers, but they take their name from the brewery's home by the stunning Hardknott Pass in west Cumbria.

3. Salopian

Smart and straightforward, with a range of brews, the brand is this year celebrating its 20th anniversary in Shropshire.

4. Siren Brewery

At barely a year old, this may be the new kid on the block, but the brewer based in Finchampstead, Berkshire, is making up for it by embarking on a number of collaborations and experiments with flavours.

5. Atom Brewery

Heading back up north to Hull for this minimalist-looking label that launched only this year, combining experimental engineering with a real love of beer.

6. Brewdog
