Woman visits all 656 Red Lion pubs in Britain

The personal trainer, travelled a staggering 90,000 miles to cross off each of the pubs on her incredibly long list. Her ambitious hunt has set her back more than �16,000 but she today said it has been 'an amazing experience' and has 'no regrets'. And she was thrilled to raise a glass in the Red Lion pub in Northmoor, Oxon, to complete her list ? which she started in April 2011. Miss Price, of Preston, Lancs, started the adventure after noticing a sign in a Red Lion pub in the Lake District which said it was the most common pub name in Britain.



A dedicated mum has completed Britain's longest pub crawl after drinking in every Red Lion in the UK.

Cathy Price, 56, spent almost five years trekking across the country, visiting all of the 656 taverns with the most common name in Britain. The personal trainer travelled a staggering 90,000 miles to cross off each of the pubs on her incredibly long list.

Her ambitious hunt set her back more than £16,000 but she says it has been "an amazing experience" and has "no regrets".

Miss Price, of Preston, Lancashire, started the adventure in April 2011. The mother-of-one made a note of all 724 pubs with that name in the UK - 90 of which have since closed - and started crossing them off one by one.

Some of the closed pubs had re-opened, bringing the total number of Red Lion pubs in the UK to 656.

At every pub she visited, Cathy posed for a photograph and downed her favourite tipple - a half pint of ale, meaning she has now drunk 328 pints.

She said: "I was drinking in the Red Lion in Hawkshead in Cumbria and saw a plaque saying it is the most common pub name.

"I immediately imagined hundreds of them dotted all over the country and came up with a crazy idea of visiting all of them."

The furthest south she travelled was to Penzance in Cornwall and the furthest north was Fochabers in Scotland.

Her favourite pub was the Red Lion in Snargate, Kent, and she visited 12 Red Lion pubs abroad - including Dubai, New York, France, Rhodes, Madeira and Australia.

The Red Lion is the most common pub name in the country, with a history dating back to King James I in 1603. When he came to the throne in 1603 he ordered all public buildings to display a heraldic red lion in a prominent place.
