A man was restrained overnight on an Emirates plane flying from Dubai to Melbourne after allegedly punching an air stewardess.

The passenger reportedly became agitated after wanting three seats to himself to lie down on during flight EK404 on Thursday night.

Passenger Matt Naylor was involved in restraining the man. According to The Age, he said: "We cable-tied him by both the feet and the hands and then we managed to get him back to his seat and got an extended seatbelt and put that around him. He would have had the strength of 10 men."

Matt said after the man was restrained, he spent the next five or six hours screaming and headbutting the seat. He added: "He was very irritated, very worked up, crying, yelling."

Matt reported that he did not see the man hit the stewardess, but that she had said he did and appeared "shaken up".

The Daily Mail reports that Matt, however, continued: "I noticed he tried to at one stage headbutt the flight attendants who were offering him water."

An Emirates spokeswoman said Federal Police met the flight upon landing.

According to ABC News, the man was, however, allowed to catch his connecting flight to Auckland.
